The Rainbow Children (NPG Records)

Imagine that breezy, '70s jazz fusionists Weather Report had stuck it out, absorbed elements of funk and hip hop, adopted a Christian outlook, and you have some inkling of what Prince is up to these days.

The Rainbow Children, his first since 1999's indifferently received Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, is unlikely to boost the former man-glyph's flagging commercial fortunes. Musically, however, it's a solid effort, if a little heavy on electronically altered vocals and sentiments such as the "opposite of NATO is OTAN." At roughly the two-thirds mark, Prince and company slip into a more comfortable groove, skilfully turning out some first-rate R&B on the silky "She Loves Me 4 Me" the funky "Family Name" and the two celebratory closers, "The Everlasting Now" and "Last December." -Vit Wagner
