More Grammy News... LOS ANGELES Feb. 10 — Entry into the parties surrounding the Grammy festivities was as coveted as a ticket to the awards show itself.
One of the most glittering events was music mogul Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy dinner and concert on Saturday night. The event attracted stars including Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Sharon Osbourne and children Kelly and Jack, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, Magic Johnson, comedian Chris Tucker, Will Farrell and many others. The dinner was a coronation for Davis: Last week, the 70-year-old founder of Arista and J Records was promoted to chairman and chief executive of BMG North America. Davis quipped to rapper Jay-Z, also in attendance: "Who would have thought five years ago that you would have retired before me?" After Sunday's Grammys, there were plenty of other celebrations, including a party hosted by OutKast, who won album of the year for "Speakerboxxx-The Love Below." A concert by Prince at the House of Blues was one of the evening's biggest draws; he sang some of his biggest hits, including "Purple Rain," "Kiss" and "Sign of the Times." Macy Gray and Angie Stone later joined him onstage. {{{And while Prince kicked off the Grammy show with Beyonce earlier in the evening, he didn't seem too impressed with the awards. He led the frenzied crowd in a chant: "Grammy don't mean nothin' to me," then added, "I know what I'm singing!"}}} http://abcnews.go.com/wir...0_509.html

I bet they meant something when he was winning them!
Well, probably not. Sorry, couldn't help it. "You know, you're the classic example of the inverse ratio between the size of the mouth and the size of the brain"

They should mean something to him, in that they afforded him a chance to get some notoriety again. Deservingly so, but the opening performance at the Grammy's and the HOB Gig both received rave reviews with nothing but praise..
Nice to hear that for a change. [This message was edited Tue Feb 10 17:39:55 PST 2004 by cracknbush] cracknbush

I understand where Prince is coming from, I guess. Everything is so commercial now that they don't mean as much as they used to. It seems that the most of the people that win these days is who ever brown noses MTV the most. For instance Justin, P. Diddy... Am I the only one who noticed that Prince had to practically snatch the mike from Beyonce to sing his part? The girl is out of control! Still fine though.

Even on the 1999 album, Prince was saying (was it DMSR?), "I don't care to win awards." Although, you'd think he'd tone it down some if he's trying to win mainstream attention again.

I bet if NEWS had won, he would have been singing a whole different chant!!

Yeah, he said "I don't care to win awards" in DMSR, but a few years later he said something like "I once wrote a song about not caring about awards, but that was because I wasn't up for any!" (paraphrasing). So maybe he is back to not caring about them, but he did say that he cared about them for awhile there.

That's Prince for you. Always biting the hand that feeds him. If it isn't the fans, then it's a record company or event that affords him the too-rare and much-needed exposure that keeps him "#1 at the bank" "Awards are like hemorrhoids. Sooner or later, every asshole gets one."

He still ended up geting a lot of exposure without winning. I hope he can follow the Grammies up with more good stuff.

He stated in 1986 that it was easy to write that line back then because he wasn't winning any. It's also been said many times he was apparently pissed that SOTT didn't get a grammy. He likes recognition for his work as much as the next man.

Of course Prince wants to be commercial, why do you think he sung with Beyonce? He could have said no to the Grammy's if he was so subversive. Some of you folks need to wake up. Prince has sold out. All you others say Hell Yea!!

If Grammy don't mean nothing to Prince, then why did he enter his NEWS into the nomination pool. Ask the Neptunes, you can't be nominated, if someone does not put in an application. Maybe Prince should tell whoever submitted his album, not to submit his stuff anymore. I don't think Prince has to worry too much about winning more grammies. Not that it's impossible. He's been around long enough to get enough votes, provided he has not pissed off too many Grammy voters. Beyonce won more in one night than he won in his lifetime. NeoSoul.com

Now THAT is the truth. I don't hold the Grammy's up to any high standard, and for all I know he should have won that award, but it's a shame he still feels the need to be so obvious about his bruised ego. But whatever. Now when's he gonna play in MY town? No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

I took it to mean that he was appreciating the crowd at the show, and that he was showing his appreciation by saying how much fun he was having, sort of: Yeah the Grammys were okay but now lets get down and have some real fun!
One thing Prince clearly seems to like is playing live jams... no-one else does aftershows like him! I think he made the comment in that vein, just coz he loves to play... I would have taken that as a compliment if I was in the audience that night!

I don't visit the site much but I do love Prince. After reading some of these reply's I wonder if you guys are Prince fans or just people with no lives. You are taking things way too serious. Such as with the Janet Jackson thing. Props to Prince for not selling out and trying to hang with the stupid celebrity in crowd that you see on MTV.
I think Prince has more talent in his pinky finger than most of these people will ever hope to have. I'm out!

When your going the more independent route it must be a different feeling when nominated vs. being with a major label release. I still did not get it when he started to place blame on WB, MTV, radio, during the "Slave era", Its was like buddy if you want to change the "system" just do it, don't bitch like a baby get off your ass and just create the music that people need!! Not caring if you won or not is better than being a bitch like 50..
