Jamie Foster-Brown: What was it like performing at Prince's party?

Alicia Keys: The was crazy. I loved it. It was at Paisley park.

Jaime: When was that?

Alicia: That was, it had to be about a month ago.

Jaime: How did you get asked to do that?

Alicia: He called me.

Jaime: Whooooo! Did you pee in your pants?

ALICIA: Sure did! You know he called me when I was in Chicago because he heard that I remade on of this songs. I remade "How Come You Don't Call Me." He called me and said, "I heard you did one of my songs and when I heard you did it I thought that I had to call my lawyer." He was very serious about that.

Jaime: [Laughing] What?

Alicia: He's real serious about people remaking his songs and just trying to exploit them.

Jaime: Can't you just do it? Isn't that public domain?

Alicia: Yeah, it is. You can't really say anything about it, but he's very serious about people just using it to get some attention or notoriety.

Jaime: Well, is that going to be the next single?

Alicia: No, it's not but it's like of the highlights of my livelihood.

Jaime: So he called you, and he was gonna call his lawyer, then what?

Alicia: Well, then I said, "Well did you hear it first? I mean, hear it before you sit here and make threats."

Jaime: Oh you said it in a nice way because you were so excited anyway, right?

Alicia: Of course, of course. You know, I was joking with him. And he said, "Well I am gonna listen to it, but I heard that it was really great and I would like you to come down to this festival that I am putting together, it you're available. I'd like to see you." So I was like, "If I'm available?!" You know? And so we worked it out and we went on down there and he just treated us like royalty, He was sooo great.

Jaime: That Paisley park is very nice, isn't it?

Alicia: Incredible. He had pianos that were custom make with round edges.

Jaime: Did you see the bedroom?

Alicia: No, we didn't get that close [laughter].

Jaime: No, but I mean I've been shown the bedroom before.

Alicia: Oh, really?

Jaime: Yeah, there at Paisley Park.

Alicia: I didn't see any of this living quarters.

Jaime: Well, it's like that bedroom that there, but your know, it's not really his. It's just a place to lie down. So you just performed and that was it?

Alicia: Yeah, we performed and it was just great. It was the bomb. Common was there and Erykah Badu was there. I was able to see them perform and say hi. And and before the show Prince came up to me and said, "I listened to the song and I think you did a wonderful job." So that was really the bomb.
