Alica Keys says Adore is the Song she wish she wrote.

{{{I just finished watching BET'S Blue print with Alica Keys,and Tiger asked her whats the one song she wish she had written. Alica said it would have to be Adore by Prince and then made the comment that "He(Prince) knows that['s] my song -- Pay Me!"}}}
I thought that was kinda cool.

oooh, watch it now,kdreon1!
go to sessions @ aol and check her doin' "How Come U Don't Call Me?" She was pretty genuine in the delivery. Very purple!

...just kinda irked me that she didn't acnkowledge Prince as an influence when asked in her interview.

Alicia is a solid musician & singer,
but she is a ways off from writing at that level that Prince had achieved in the mid-80s
&
which has, of course, declined significantly.. as of, oh, about 1997 or so..
I'll see you tonight..

That had to be an oversight. I've read about a zillion interviews with Alicia where she names Prince and Stevie Wonder as huge influences. In fact, I've heard some people accuse her of riding P's coattails (which is kinda absurd, IMHO). She seems to have massive respect for the man, which is cool in my book. Alecia isn't the greatest musician, but she does have talent, and I think she will blossom as she grows. Her first album was a strong debut for someone so young (especially in today's climate of Britney and crap like that).

The mid-80's maybe, but compare both of their seconds albums and they're about even nod

I must confess I have a huge crush on Alicia...

To these ears, however, she
seems to have hit something of a creative block
because the songs on her second album sound
laboured and uninspired - and not because
"The Diary Of Alicia Keys" is
an album that demands repeated listening.

I hope she's not already past her peak.

Uh, eye think Prince can read music. He was trained by his dad (a trained jazz musician). Eye have seen him write music, so he must be able 2 read it.

Just a thought.

Prince has said in his 80's interviews that he could not read music and said he had no plans in learning to. Unless he lied then he probably still cannot read. And Alicia is a very talented girl, she's young, give her a break, give her time. Gosh you guys are heartless. You expect her to be up to the level of these guys right off the bat? Prince was likewise ridiculed as not being like smokey,marvin...etc. Alicia has a great future if she keeps here head on straight and by the way, she is technically a better piano player than prince.

At least she's being consistent. She's been saying she wishs she'd written Adore since Songs in A Minor first came out. And to all of you saying "what's so special?" go to her concerts and see that she "performs". Nuff said already!

Well, that's all subjective. I could say I think Prince's voice is much better, especially for a song like Adore. That depends on the listener's preferences, I guess. Plus, a "great" piano player? I dunno, from what I've heard it seems she had training in playing classical, but I don't really like the way she tries to incorparate that in her poppy (and btw IMO very commercialised) songs. All that is very subjective too: some like it, some don't. I don't, for one. But for the rest, I don't think anyone can disagree that she can't write a song like Adore, let alone perform it right, can she?

Alicia can play piano...she can write a song or two...I believe Norah Jones kicks her ass in the talent department. They are both young and time will tell.I saw Alicia perform and her show was intentionally made long to seem like she had a lot of material but instead she filled it with crap side acts. Her strong point is the piano and she should stick to the (Alicia) Keyes.Work on the stage presence before ya hit the road again.Write your OWN material again instead of riding off of Princes hits. He does that wel enough on his own. When artists make serious money off of other artists compositions it looks as if they can't write enough of their own stuff that is high quality. It looks weak.

I think this would be a better point had "How Come U Don't Call me Anymore?" been the biggest hit she had or even the biggest off that album. "Fallin" and "A Woman's Work" both faired much better, and HCUDCMA actually fell way short of the other two singles. So she is far from "riding off of Prince's hits", and her new album does have a cover on it but the strongest material is stuff she wrote.

That's kinda implicit in these type of discussions ain't?

I mean of course it's subjective whether you prefer one artist over the other for whatever reason

Yes, but it also depends on how you formulate your preferences. Saying "she is a great piano player" sounds more objective than "I think she is a great piano player". In this discussion it is obviously meant to mean the latter, which is subjective.

Anyway, my question was if she could write a song like Adore and perform a right. I still didn't get an answer to that, so I guess that's a pretty objective question, isn't it?
