Mojo Interview Sampled on 12" Single

Ok, this is DEFINITELY one weird Prince reference:

Detroit's own legendary funky/house/soul producer, MOODYMANN(Kenny Dixon Jr.) has just released a 12" single entitled "Jan" on his own Detroit based record label, KDJ. The over eleven minute epic track contains several very cool samples. Not of Prince, but of the infamous DJ, The Electrifying Mojo, from the classic interview he conducted with Prince back in 1986 while he was in Detroit for his Birthday gig (remember when he used to CELEBRATE them?).

The deceptivly-simple song (to some) is actually quite complex, with many subtle changes along the way. Mojo's dialogue pops in and out for the duration of the song, but you never actually hear Prince. Moodymann has creativly cut n' pasted it together so it seems like Mojo is talking about, or interviewing Moodymann. Very cool stuff! We have all heard Prince samples in many songs before, but I definitly think this use of sampling in reference to him is a first.

Moodymann is a Big Prince fan and often name-drops him as a major influence. For the intro track to his brilliant "Mahogany Brown" album of a couple years back, he even had a chunk of a commercial for a Prince concert included in the song..."Prince! Live and Uncensored..."
Yeah, it actually says that wink Quite funny, as now it would have to say: "Live and Censored!!!!" That would be some promotion to fill the seats wink
