Prince is concerned about his bootlegs so intensely because he is incapable of making music anymore that compares to the better songs in the vault. He is incapable of making a truly good album anymore-that is why it has almost been 3 years since a proper studio album. The musicianship is still there,in concert, but the songwriting abilities are gone. Dried up! Prince has contempt for you. He likes your money, and your massaging his vanity, but he has utter contempt for you. He wants to keep the vault stuff from you even though he isn't making any plans to release it(the bootlegs just show how good he USED to be) and no record companies are looking for mouldy 80's linn drum/synthesiser dated stuff. They want the next big thing. He's washed-up, bitter, isn't driven by the things of his youth, and he sees his fans the same way he did WB Records- a $$$ resource he has contempt for.He lacks the intregity to give you the best he can, what you want. Your loyality isn't repaid. Bet you anything you see a greatest hits tour this year because that's all he has left to sell-memories! Wow. I hate to admit it, but I think you're definitely on the right track.

Since he doesn´t care about fans, about his career and he doesn´t need money anymore (he has more than enough), he can be the guy he has always been, with a difference, he doesn´t need to fake anything now.

Truly sad. I really wish Prince would realise that nobody is even buying bootlegs anymore. All that are left are a few hardcore fans who are trading stuff, and every one of them would buy the stuff again if he just made it available. All he's doing is alienating his few remaining fans. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

What would U do when someone steals your shit (music that is not worth releasing or good enough in your or record company´s opinion) and sells or recommends (it is an advertisment) it to your public. It is against the law, his fans should not take it for granted that his music has been heavily sold as boots for decades.
WE should respect what he does, he has released more music than any other pop superstar has, we are already blessed with that.

u have a point & if P would just take some of the ReQuest some of the Famz have & put it all on a Double Album or 1 CD/Album then the NPGMC would b "Jumpin' Around" Much more then it does now... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

But isn't it better trying to track down the source, ie the bootleggers? How hard can it be to trace them back to Sabotage, Moonraker et al and get them buggers sued?

I totally agree with all of you guys. Prince's live stuff is so far the best stuff to listen to. his official recordings are not enough. It's good to have, but it's not enough. I haven't bought his last three albums in the last 5 years, because I don't like the music as well as I like the old stuff and his live stuff. His is one of the greatest live acts and I too wish he would officially release this stuff too, so the bootleggers wouldn't have anything to put out. But Prince is going to be Prince. But one thing he fails to realize is he can close down all the sites he wants to, if a fan wants to know any information on his bootlegs or anything else and wants to get a hold of them there's always a way to find out. Where there is a will there is a way. Site or no site. Anyway, I love Prince anyway and his bootlegs including the quality sound will always outweigh the officials (especially the latest stuff).

1) Are you sure there's nothing illegal. They must be legally "grey" at least. Surely they can be accused of promoting and encouraging illegal acts. I imagine the argument would be - no guide to boots, less interest, less info, which must mean less sales, which means less piracy. 2) How would you feel if people were making money from your music, without your say so, with no quality control from you and no money for you either. I'd be upset, so if I had a big old legal team I'd try and do what I could to hurt the bootleggers. OK - flame away!

EVERYONE that knows a boot site.KEEP IT ON THE DOWN LOW. Don't post the name which of the site--that's common sense. I suggest sites be created for one day, announce what's available ask interested parties to send email for more info and vanish.
Prince isn't like Disney which has 250 people searching the Internet daily for sites that are using Mickey Mouse and friends without their permission. Therefore, a boot site can be available for 24 hours before and he would never find out. Unless some 'faithful FOLLOWER' that isn't getting paid emails NPGMC. Go Bootleggers!!!

There ins't anything illegal about discussing bootlegs, even if the bootlegs themselves are illegal. Take another example: Marijuana is illegal, but talking about it isn't. If it were, there would never have been "High Times" magazine, and Cheech and Chong would never have had a career. I imagine the argument would be - no guide to boots, less interest, less info, which must mean less sales, which means less piracy. Nonsense. Bootlegging has existed long before the internet. 2) How would you feel if people were making money from your music, without your say so, with no quality control from you and no money for you either. I'd be upset, so if I had a big old legal team I'd try and do what I could to hurt the bootleggers. But he's not going after the bootleggers. He's strong arming a bunch of small, indy internet sites who discuss bootlegs (with a disclaimer that they don't sell, distribute or trade this material). An argument could be made that a site like this is actually a great resource for an artist to discover what bootlegs are out there, so they could go after the offending labels. Personally, I think Prince would be far better served going after labels like Sabotage, rather than attacking his fans. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely agree. Your dope comparison is interesting. Discussing bootlegs is one thing, I'd suggest the argument P makes is that rating them is a different kettle of fish altogether. A site containing 500 ways of murdering people, ranked in order of enjoyment or with little reviews saying how easy it is to clean up afterwards, how easy it is to get away with etc. is not free speech, it is (implicitly perhaps) condoning and promoting murder. I think therefore the argument would be the same here (although the subject matter is much more trivial!!). Plus the site did contain pictures of Prince which were in themselves legally dubious.

I totally agree. If it wasn't for the boots this P freak wouldn't be hangin around in '04 by any means. I would've given long ago if all i had of his music was his "officially released" music. I put it in quotes because there was a 10 year period where P had to know what albums or live shows would make it to video or cd when he made them. For example, the Black Album's stinted release, and the numerous Japanese and European televised live concerts. Ok... What about this?
I live in Argentina. Prince doesn't have too many fans here beside me.. PPL doesn't like him too much. So it's hard to find a Prince cd since he released Purple Rain... I know . I hate that fact, but it's true. I found a few of those originals and bought them. But to be honest Bootlegs are the only way to find most of his music... So I have the right to be angry at him!!! I love the man, love his music I hear his cds every time I can, but he is pissing me off with this shit. Bootlegs sites are th only "safe" way to get his music for me. Peace.- J319.- Love can save us all......

Well if your going to moan and groan about this bootleg shit ,Why dont you send Prince a fifteen dollar check for every bootleg that you have purchased. This way you will have what you want and he will gwt the money that he is intitled to. If your not willing to cut him off his piece of the pie then stop crying like a bitch. I don't care where you live, Your not doing him any favors.

Well as I have stated consistently in this arguement. No one has a right to bootleg an artist. If you buy bootlegs (I am not completely innocent in this) you are doing something illegal. I just don't know why everyone here thinks they are entitled to Prince bootlegs. That to me is like people who feel they are entitled to file sharing (agian I am not innocent in this). For me I understand Prince wanting sole control over his musical output this does not make him an asshole it makes him a smart business man. I mean really folks. Why should he let someone else make assloads of money on music that he created and he not even get a cut. Truth be told most black artist got enough of that in the 50's. So I think that people need to really sit back and ask themselves what rights do I have to this music? As I stated in the other thread about this topic. We own the CD's that we legally purchase. We do not own the intellectual property that is the music itself. That right goes to the creator of such properties and that is Prince himself. I also don't agree with this concept that Prince has fallen off. Prince is older and thank God he is not trying to write music like he did when he was 24 or younger. To me that would be way more terrible than any album he has made in recent years. Prince to me is an incredible artist whose full impact will not be felt until years after his death. Then most of you will of course say how much you loved NEWS etc. But for me I choose to go on the journey that he is on because at least for now it is interesting to me. What I like I like and what I don't like I don't like. Still I believe that you can't please everyone and no matter what Prince does many of you are going to hate it and him just the nature of the beast I guess.
Peace THE CARDINAL HAS SPOKEN!!!

First: I don't HAVE to do him any favor, Bull. I just want to get his music. Buying it or downloading it. Second: If I could, I wouldn't do it. I rather have originals than booltelgs or copies. And third: A Prince cd doesn't cost 15 US dollars here, so I won't pay that money for downloading one for the internet!!! GOT IT??? I'm not crying man, I'm complaining. Besides I have the right to do it my country is as free as yours. Peace.- J319.- Love can save us all......

your forgetting just one very important thing. It is illegal. Buying bootlegs is illegal, downloading bootlegs is illegal. And to add insult to injury Prince doesn't make any money from bootlegs. So we cannot do this legally in this country. And for the record ,bootleg CD's cost alot more than 15 dollars. So stop complaining.

What a shame. Just as Prince is getting ready to put out an album, and get a lot of critical acclaim as the R&R Hall of Fame induction approaches... he goes and fucks up again. What is it with this guy? What a douchebag. As I've said before. He'll waste no opportunity to squander the good will and support of his fans and the public. Fucking moron. Your right when you say they probably don't have the assests. I remember in the late 90's when Prince pulled this stunt alot of those sites and fanzines couldn't fight back becuase they couldn't afford to. I think Uptown Magizine was lucky enough to have a lawyer donate his services and as a result their still around. Who knows maybe the only thing these guys can do to strike back is get their devoted followers to boycott his music. Hell without the money his fans spend on his music and concerts he probably couldn't afford his legal team anyway

Hey Bull, Prints & Chiltonmusic I AGREE with you guys!! I get so sick & tired of comin to this site and everybody is just kickin Prince left & right for ANYTHING he does! Don't you hate it?! I don't understand how a "FAN COMMUNITY" site can hate their idol so much! This is supposed to be an "I love Prince" site, isnt it? Or did the name deceive me?? It seems more like an "online b*tch community". I always think the next time I come on here that it'll be different, but it isn't and that's sad. You (you know who u r) should take a look at the Michael Jackson FAN COMMUNITY sites...THOSE r what THIS SHOULD BE!!! And it doesn't matter if u hate MJ or not, u ALREADY HATE Prince! I support both of them 1 million percent! ~~BOOTLEGS ARE ILLEGAL~~ I AGREE w/those of you who UNDERSTAND that yes, even TALKING about bootlegs PROMOTES them, doesn't matter if the sites have a disclaimer sayin they don't sell them. They r still puttin the info out there for ppl to go find it and not PAY PRINCE A DIME! HE DOESN'T OWE YOU ANYTHING~HE'S PUT OUT MORE MUSIC THAN MOST. For him to still be around and makin music and doin concerts is a BLESSING to say the least! Some of u guys should BE CAREFUL what u say about PRINCE or he may have THIS SITE SHUT DOWN! And I wouldn't blame him! We wouldn't want to become www.TheWebsiteFormerlyKnownAsPRINCE.ORG !!! KEEP YA THOUGHTS POSITIVE!
