Do not trade or purchase any release with materials officially available. Get The Real Deal! (...) I've been getting a lot of email again ask me if these items are for sale or if I get people in touch with a bootleg label. The answer is NO. This site is for info only and we can not help anyone on their quest for these items. Sorry. Alex Hahn where r u?

how? explain further, please. show proof. "This research is strictly used for information purposes to provide serious Prince collectors, who already have all official materials, with information about alternative materials that are available somewhere in the world." It´s the orginal quotation from guide2Prince.org. For me it obviously means:"if you have all the official stuff, just buy the illegal one now!" To say that illegal music is "alternative material" means, that´s OK! It´s absolutely not fair toward Prince, isn´t it?
sure it is--it's prince's damned fault in the first place for the leakage of such material. if there's anyone who he should be chastising, it's himself. Maybe a lot of us wish Prince to do this, maybe I, too. But it´s his business. It´s his right as a musician to own his art. And also his right to fight against people who steal his music and make money from it.

Shutting down that website serves no purpose whatsoever. It seems strange that it happened shortly after another site asked 4 info 2 update G2P. Whatever happens Prince bootlegs are gonna be discussed and rated on the web.
Prince probably has the most interesting unreleased output of any current artist. There are some amazing outtakes, concerts, club shows. He can't stop interest in aquiring those recordings nomatter how many websites he shuts down. I ain't gonna stop G2P or no G2P.

i understand Prince's point & @ the same time i'm not understanding his point.
i agree like some1 stated earlier (in this thread) that P is responsible 4 "The Vault music" being trickled here or there. i've heard that some of his "friends" were given copies of some of the music that we know about or may even have. 4 xample "The Black Album" is 1 of the Most BootLeg'd Albums ever made & we can go from there. but the POINT is that P didn't like what was being posted there & he had his Legal Dept. close the site... if they discuss Boots then P takes action... go figure. make a Private Yahoo! Group & discuss it or somethin'... i knew about the site but never went there. they didn't have any mp3s 2 DL... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I think he is a dick for doing this but I understand why he is doing it.
He is a dick because all it will do is piss people off and it's such a minor site. It really doesn't effect anyone badly (icluding himself) if he just let it be. The reason i say I understand why he is doing it is because although the site does not sell, trade bootlegs etc it does implicitly encourage them. As pointed out above, it also illegally publishes copyrighted photographs, images etc. We all know the knucklehead is driven insane by the fact that these bootlegs are out there (even though he fails to see they promote him). Only diehards purchase and trade them and they will buy all the released material anyway. I can understand his position but I think for the sake of his image he should just let the site be. This illistrates once again his lack of good independant management (his current manager is a fool ) . Many of you keep saying that it is the diehard fans that buy the bootlegs and you are correct in saying this but that still doesn't make it right. Come on with that nonsense. He owns this material and if someone steal it that is wrong. As I said earlier I own alot of this material but that doesn't make it right on my part. And for those of you that keep defending that sight, let me ask yal a question. How many of you own or purchased material from these sights? Just what I thought. I no that I have.So I'm not going to sit here and act like prince is screwing this sight when I know that I have a boatload of unreleased material. Soft&wet you hit the nail on the head.

I don't understand Prince's motive here. What does he stand to gain? Better yet, look at what he stands to lose. For someone who doesn't believe in war, he sure starts a lot of them. It's a pity the little man can't just enjoy lifes ride.
Prince who? His royal madness will bring his own demise.

Bull - bootlegs are wrong when deemed wrong, but you have something called freedom of speech buddy, Was that site wrong for posting information about bootlegs that exhist? I mean come on - pick up Goldmine magazine and you will find plenty of people selling boots - so your going to attack someone that does not sell them over someone that profits. I know many of us have a ton of the bootleg shit, you collect all that crap to a point and ask? WTF am I doing? I have all this crap and do not listen to it! Many artists use tape trader recording to promote! I guess with New Power they figure it will scare people away! bawhawhawhaw. Remember when he was begging people to send him "unauthorized material", boots etc.. for the lawsuit! Prince will do anything to clean the boots of the street, right or wrong.

Wrong...guide2prince.org did not "encourage people to buy illegal music". It was a resource about recordings that are illegal to sell, but not to trade or to own. It encouraged people to learn more about and enjoy Prince's music more. I haven't bought a bootleg in years, but I checked the site as a reference for boot material that I downloaded or traded for. And it is certainly "fair toward Prince" because it probably made his fan base larger and put more $$ in his pocket.

Wouldn't it be wiser for Prince to record and release 2 or 3 of his live shows a year and sell them for twenty bucks a pop on his own site?? They'd sell out in minutes! He would be in control. We would be happy. This isn't brain surgery.

Sad news indeed! What a shame. That site wasn't just a rare, live, rehearsal, unreleased reference library...it was more than that...when you think about it it was a great historic document of Princes art & career as a whole. A time capsule. A time capsule of a supertalented musician.
A supertalented guy...with an out of control 'control' issue...out of control ego...and too many out of control lawers... again...biting the hand that feeds him. WE... those of us left who still regularly follow and purchase his official releases...WE are the ones who are also the 'rare' collectors...WE are the ones who, given the opportunity, would gladly pay Prince directly for official releases of the product we desire. gladly. But we do not have that opportunity. He has not given us that opportunity. Its been said before, but he is alienating the very people...almost the ONLY people who still reliably continue to support his official releases. he has got it all wrong..he is going about this the same way that the record companies originally reacted to the internet...trying to bully something out of existance... instead of attempting to embrace it's concept and making it work FOR you... no. his fanbase lawsuit tactics combined with his lack of followthrough on providing an alternative option for those craving 'the goods' just makes for a growingly bitter core fanbase... How many cds do you think he could sell if he regularly audio recorded a handfull of official concerts, aftershows & rehearsals? (i'm sure he does this anyway...has his shows recorded through soundboard to review himself)...so say he records some of them and posts a listing of which events he had available on his website for folks to pre-order. Then he and his Music club employees could maybe spend their time burning digital copies of those gigs themselves based on those preorders...send the things out in plain old manila cd folders or blank cd jewel boxes with simply the name and date of the gig typed on or stuck onto it. Don't need to spend money art design, printing etc...keep the production costs down to a fraction of what a 'normal' cd release would be. Plus he could fire all those lawers too...think of the money he'd save doing that alone... in the scenario above...whats left of his fanbase would be happy...and would likely start growing again. prince would get much more positive press and would get that 'control' he so desires over pretty much every aspect of his music. The only folks that could suffer here would be bootlggers...because the product they produce...the live gigs, the rehearsals...would be available from the original source legally... just the damn music is all we want...its all we ever really wanted...its what he SAID was going to happen once he left wb right...'release the music'...'free the music' i think he said...those were HIS words now...well we don't even want it for free, like i said WE'd gladly PAY him for it...IF he gave us that option. he hasn't. he sues us instead. I will miss GTP.org...and i want to officially thank the creators of that site for their years of time and devotion (and I'm sure money too) that they invested in it...it was a cherished cornerstone of the real Prince fanbase...it was one of the first of its kind...a classic. In spite of this latest event you should know that all the efforts you put into it over the years...for us... it was well worth it. So thanks!

true.
it is not illegal to talk about anything. but...trading illegal material is illegal, and if the website is involved in any way, well they should expect if someone finds out about it, there will be action taken, no?? i am not saying that prince is doing the right thing. but, there is no complaining for getting caught breaking the law right? what ever you do people,...dont get caught!! cborgman said: slm4m said: eleven said: slm4m said: SaintPauli said: seems like there is a legit complaint from prince about the site. although i do not agree with what he did. but it seems as though that site is set up for the sole purpose of bootleg trading, no?
YES -- your right, the site reads like its "telling" tht it does not know where the boots are. It is kind of assuming that most fans know where the boots are. Why would a site discuss boots and think they are not promoting the sale of illegal recordings, don't fool yourself they are promoting illegal material. That is just plain wrong. Aren't most boots just crappy audio anyway? Sheeet! What R U smoking??? If I were an artist and you stole recordings from me and then discussed them on a internet site -- I would be more than a little angry. It's illegal, no two ways about it. it's not illegal, it's called freedom of speech. the only way it would be illegal would be if they were dealing them or providing the opportunity to others to deal them

this is rather delicate subject right now as prince knows by shutting down g2p, people will start discussing alternative sites.
I have had several orgnotes asking for the alternate sites... I am not saying anyone is - but you COULD possibly be in some way working for him trying to get th eothers exposed and into the limelight.. I think it would be best to wait for a while before revealing any other sites to anyone. Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!
