Prince mentions in SPIN mag I just got the September issue of Spin magazine with Sugar Ray on the cover.
There are a couple of Prince references in the album reviews section: 1. Chocolate Genius: Godmusic (P.163 - 8/10 rating): "At one point (singer/ songwriter Marc Anthony) Thompson whips up a guitar loop out of Prince's "7", sticks a recording of some melodious snoring over it, and calls the thing "Birth Control". But he gets away with it: credulous as he is crass, a born dandy, rolling through the frontier between the liminal and the subliminal". 2. Bilal: 1st Born Genius (P. 158 - 7/10 rating): "Bilal can sex up Dr. Dre's glossy funk (the cameo-bouncing "Sally); channel Prince, Marley and Stevie with equal aplomb; or bypass Mr. Roger Nelson's hood and go straight to Slyville, as he does on the vaguely 'Riot'-ish "Slyde".....The only drawback is that in his expansiveness, Bilal forgot to give himself that killer tune or two that would bring it all home....." | |
