Tommy Lee came face to face with his romantic rival Kid Rock. But instead of clobbering him for stealing Pamela Anderson, Lee thanked Rock for doing him a favor.

The bizarre exchange happened backstage, moments before Lee went onstage to play drums with pop punksters Sum 41. Lee was luxuriating in the VIP area with girlfriend Mayte and former flames Carmen Electra and Kylie Bax, when Mayte pointed out Kid Rock hanging at the bar with his entourage.

Mayte pointed at Kid Rock and whispered to Lee, "You should go over there and thank him, because now you and I are together.' "

As Lee was being hustled onstage past Kid Rock, he stared him in the eye and said: "Hey, dude, I want to thank you [for taking up with Anderson]. If it wasn't for you, I would have never met her," at which point he picked up Mayte and kissed her on the lips before bounding on stage.

"Kid Rock was speechless," says a source. "It was very tense. Everybody stopped talking when they were face to face. Tommy was towering over him and it looked like something was going to happen."
