Andre 3000 interview mentions Prince

{{{Andre 3000 states that the best critic he ever read about his Love Below album was one in which the journalist stated that he wanted to sound like Prince. Even if the journalist had a double intention on his comment he reckons he really wants to sound like Prince.
http://www1.folha.uol.com...9870.shtml}}}

[Last night I was watching videos with the wife and when Hey Ya came on I said, "If Prince was young, from the South, and lanky, he'd be what Andre3000 is today." I really believe that. -Ben]

Andre 3000 was interviewed by a finnish rockmagazine maybe a month ago, and when asked about possible co-operation with Prince, he said "it has been discussed".
Now THAT would be interesting...

Andre´s album is brilliant, She lives in my lap is almost like If I was your girlfriend + she´s alway in my hair, very princey. 50% of his album is like that, but he is original as a musician, producer and songwriter. I believe Outkast will win most Grammyies this year.

Well, of course Outkast will win lots of Grammies. With the exception of Norah Jones' surprise wins last year, when was the last time the Grammies made any sense? Outkast is popular, so they are the shoe-in, whether its deserved or not. Plenty of better music will be ignored, you can count on it. Don't get me wrong, Outkast is good, but they aren't the end-all be-all that many are making them out to be.

Yeah the album is cool, but Mr. 3000 is trying too hard to sound like Prince on this thang. I mean-I love the sound, but he gets few points for originality. I mean, Prince didn't ride James Brown's jock this hard.

I just think it's cool that Andre is acknowledging what some other artists wouldn't dare say publicly even though we (the fans) know there are many artists that borrow from Prince's many styles. Andre leaves no room for doubt, he boldly says "yes I do want to sound like Prince" it's like Andre is openly embracing Prince and giving credit where credit is do and I like that.

Here is a translation web-site for future reference. The translations aren't perfect of course, but you can definitely get the jist of the interview in English if you cut and paste the link to the article.

Shut your mouths, The Love Below is a great album. Yes, 3000 borrowed heavily from Prince--but you can name (I know I can) 10 other artists that have done the same over the past 20 years. Whether it is inspired by the purple one or not the album is a great rock/r&b/psycholdelic pop masterpiece. Speakerboxxx is ok too, but rap is so over. It needs a new sound. I think Dre saw that and decided to take it to another level.

Shit, at least we got a Prince album this year. And I ain't talking about S.N.E.W.S. The Love Below is bad ass, I hope it sweeps the Grammies and 3000 does a kick ass version of Hey Ya!

I think Prince sees all of this and his answer will be Musicology.

I think it's great Andre wants to sound like Prince. All he needs to do is learn how to sing, learn how to play an instrument, learn how to write a song, learn how to...

If you really listen to the album, it's deep. THe majority of it follows a bachelor who is in search for love; a true lady. Other parts of the album are more personal, he talks about the relationship with him and Queen Badu. Says nothing bad about her, has the upmost respect for her as the mother of his son '7'.

There's a song called 'She's Alive' about a single mother raising a child alone, and maintaining a incredible strength. Brought tears to my eyes, I can relate.

Now...in comparison to other 'Rap' albums/singles out The Love Below/Hey Ya are phenomenal. Much of my family disagrees (I'm always the odd one out). They'd rather listen to the raw, beautiful, poetic rhymes of Lil' Jon and The Eastside Boys. Oh yeah, now that's music! rolleyes

"GET LOW! SWEAT DRIP DOWN MY BALLS, AND THEN ALL THESE BITCHES CRAWL, THEN ALL SKEET, SKEET sperm"

You gotta be jokin' me. I heard my 3 year old son repeating those lyrics, and I chased him up and down the street.

I'll stick with Prince nod

The Love Below CD SUCKS! YEa it has maybe 2 good songs but thats it, Speakerbox is better , not that I love it either. But who am I to say that, I haven't heard a true Prince album since ohhh 1999, and not the year. I know to most this will be a bad comparison, but back in the early 80's Willie Nelson and other country act went for a pop sound, OVERPRODUCTION! His albums sucked till he got back to basics, him, and a guitar. Thats why the only album I really liked of P's lately was ONA. I mean how many of P's album were overdone, COME is a great example, The song live rocked, CD version, BORING! How about most of 0+>, or GOld experience, and especially Emancapation, All would have been better if it wasn't so glossy sounding. And what ever happend to the guitar sounds he used in Lovesexy, and Batman, or better yet, where is the white, guitar, he used in the Alaphabet St. video?

Hell with all these comparisons, like Andrea 3000, I just want the real Prince to show up and rock!

I hear the spirit of Prince in Andre's music, but it's certainly not a rip-off of Prince's style. It's easy to write him off as a wannabe but if you listened to the album it goes places (musically) Prince never went-- atleast not successfully. Most importantly it's fun and interesting.

By the way somebody said there are people out there far more deserving of Grammies (whatever that's worth) than Outkast. Who are they? Seriously, I'd like to know. Don't give me the usual culprits I hear around here-- Bowie, Radiohead etc.

I was very drawn 2 andre's album more so than 2 speakerboxx and with so much of the crap that comes out these days that all sounds 'overproduced' would much prefer 2 put this one on the stereo - will never b Prince tho no matter how well he carries off the sound although very enjoyable and refreshing all the same thumbs up 2 Andre

Alright, I'll take up some slack for Andre3000, its his song and video which got the dbl cd set where it really is on the charts...to be honest, Big Boi's effort was not well recieved at first, but because its a duo project, the label had to push both singles... Mtv still plays 'Hey Ya' more and it also recieved Billboards most downloaded song...not to mention its play on alternative-rock formatted stations and pop and r/b...Big Boi's song had to grow on me...the video concept for 'Hey Ya' is what sparked my interest and soon after the song -I realized was HOTT!

Whether he's trying hard to be PRINCE, it definitely worked for PRINCE and the young music buying public, likes to be entertained, they enjoy loud colors and eccentric images, dancing and music...so it worked for him, and alot of them have no clue that PRINCE once covered all of what Andre is doing!

Because Prince's last commercial string of music came from the early 1990's and most kids can't remember that far back...being that they were 6 or 7 then.

So The Love Below is brilliant in its own right!!!
Speakerboxx is just plain ole Hip Hop and wouldn't have been more successful if the two cds were released seperately!!!
