Nashville Scene on No-Swearing Prince

The Filth and the Fury
By Ben Taylor
July 19, 2001

A couple of months ago, Minneapolis' favorite son Prince announced in a magazine interview that he would no longer be cursing. Continuing to add to the long list of his bizarre moves in the past decade, Prince claims to have become a Jehovah's Witness and will now avoid profanity as a result. He claimed that use of those words only served to "call up all the anger, all the negative times the word has been used before."

Personally, I'd never considered Prince to be all that foul-mouthed. In fact, it always seemed to me that his gift was for salacious innuendo without crudity. And even when he was crude, what was so negative about a line like, "I don't mean to sound nasty, but I would sincerely like to fuck the taste from your mouth"? At least he starts off sounding somewhat apologetic.

(There are other references, also.)
