Justin from Darkness mentions Prince

Hey I'm not sure if this is NEWS or should be posted in forum so apologies if this is wrong place!

In an interview about Pop Idol Justin Hawkins lead singer from The Darkness mentioned Prince. It went along the lines of:

'I know it sounds harsh but fuck Will and Gareth (winners of last years Pop Idol). Where are the Kate Bushs and Princes of today? The record companies won't touch them because they're too scared.'

well I am not surprised.

the song "I believe in a thing called love" is totally based on a riff from "3 Chains o Gold."

to the extent, I reckon Prince could sue him and win, it is exactly the same.

They're great fun, they are more a copy of Queen than anything Princey, although the falsetto voice could point to P's influence

How is this news?

Its just a rhetorical refernce to a type of artist, not even directly prince related...

I have to agree. Much as I love you guys for bringing all the latest Prince news, perhaps this one is going just a bit too far.

Too far?

That is a GREAT quote.

There are always quotes from other artists about Prince on the Org, and this is one of the best.

nah, that falsetto is not to be taken seriously. They are a fun band though.

Justin is bang-on about the bloody reality-show popstar creations, but he shouldn't be too worried about these impostors, since his band's single and album sales are huge (at least in the UK), and The Darkness produces real and true art, OK, "Cock Rock." If only The Darkness would cover "Bambi", "Zannalee", and "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?"... then we wouldn't have to wait an eternity for Prince to sing his hard rock songs. The Darkness are returning to tour North America soon, check local listings.

Its because of idiotic record companies that promote trash like the darkness that we may never see another prince or whatever for a very long time.Justin(from the darkness)and Justin(trousersnake)are just two examples about what is wrong with music today. If anyone wants to give newer talent the thumbs up buy the new Alicia Keys cd and ignore The Darkness and step into the light.

I think The DArkness is GREAT! I heard thier single while on MSN or something like that, and I was really taken by Justin's vocals,a nd playful energy. It's nice to see rock return to being "fun" again. His voice is like a stronger Beck, but along the same lines.

Also, the rest of the album is way more Zepplin than Prince. Also, how can you say this band is part of the problem?! They are doing something completely different than the rest of popular music, albeit a reworking of an era past. I always love to hear artists that challenge contemporary culture. Isn't that the definition of art: a reaction to contemporary culture?

I don't wanna sound too harsh, but this is bullshit. Both Prince and The Darkness had the same influence: 70ies glam rock. 'a thing called love' sounds exactly like an unreleased 70ies album from Queen, and '3 Chains 'o' gold' is in the same style as 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. They both copied this style, there' s nothing original or inventive.
Please also remember that the 'symbol' album came out in the year after freddie mercury' s death. it' s probably a hommage to him and queen. when i remember correctly 'bohemian rhapsody' was all over the charts and on radio at that time, because it was featured in the "waynes world" movie and was re-released as a single from the soundtrack. probably prince heard it on the radio and "borrowed" from it.

Anything that gets music back to the fun but talented, as The Darkness are, is both welcome and long overdue.

I seriously don't believe the biggest rock star in Britain needs his family and friends to back him up on a website dedicated to a faded Eighties pop star.

hehehe, good point. for all those who dont know, the darkness are a "classic" stadium rock style band who are the biggest band in the UK at the moment, their album has just sold over a million which is like selling 3 or 4 million in the USA. their influences are queen, ac/dc, led zeppelin and aerosmith, among other bands like thin lizzy. basically rock. but when you hear them in interviews, like this one, i think they know what theyre on about.

as for this being news, when i sent it in i said put it in a forum if its not news, but basically everything is such a crossover here i wouldnt get wound up about it if i were you!

as for the whole pop idol debate, afriend pointed out to me that 2003 hasnt actually been that bad as pop music goes, there has been some excellent stuff, but music seems to go in 10 year cycles anyway. as for the prince/kate bush thing, as opposed to quality, i think he means where are the artists doing stuff like they did, for anyone in the UK, try imagine someone from pop idol doing a vid like wuthering heights, or singing a song about being someones girlfriend. never gonna happen!

and just exactly how does that explain why sections of the two songs are note for note exactly the same ?

There is copying a style and there is blatantly stealing note for note riffs.

Funky Strange,

Prince is well known as an artist who blatently fused the styles of many other artists into his music. Ever heard of James Brown? Go listen to Controversy, High Fashion, or any of Prince "funkier" music. The rhythm and style are directly "borrowed" from JB. And I assume that the "New Jack Swing" Sound of the Batman album was created by Prince as well? Wrong. Prince borrowed that from Teddy Riley, and his old friends Jam & lewis.Lest we not froget the direct correlation between Wendy & Lisa's introducing Prince to the Beatles and ATWIAD. That album rekks of late '60s Lennon. I could go on and on. Ever heard of Hendrix, Sly Stone, Kate Bush, The Cars, Joni MItchell and many many more.

Now I am not saying Prince music isn't at times GREAT, I am however saying that ALL artists have influences, and it sometimes is more evident in some songs than than others. Prince is without a doubt one of my absolute favorite musicians of all-time, but PLEASE do not assert that other younger musician's do not have the right to respect, admire, and emulate him. Many on this site did the same thing to D'Angelo and missed out on one of the best albums of the last decade.Great art feeds great art. Ya' dig?

Just one small question... What on earth does this have to do with what I was talking about ?

I am saying 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love' has a section that is straight out of '3 Chains Of Gold.' - note for note.

You seem to be saying that Prince borrows styles of music from others ? Who ever said he didn't ?

You totally lost me...
