Another Hawaii interview (a much better one) {{{http://the.honoluluadvert...il02a.html
Prince opens door to unarmed chat By Derek Paiva Honolulu Advertiser Entertainment Writer The artist formerly known as The Artist Formerly Known As Prince opened up — sort of — to select members of the Honolulu media yesterday afternoon at Blaisdell Arena. The artist once again known as Prince said in a quick interview that he most enjoys his yearly visits to his Maui home because he likes the people and 'nobody's frontin' in Hawai'i. The occasion for the one-on-one interviews, scheduled only hours earlier? Boosting apparently sluggish ticket sales to the musician's concerts tonight at the Blaisdell Arena and Friday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. But while Prince may have wanted some fast press, he wasn't about to avoid calling the shots. And so, denied permission to document our meeting with video, tape recorder, or even a paper and pen, The Advertiser arrived empty-handed for a 15-minute sit-down with Prince in his dressing room before an early evening rehearsal. "Who's the first patient?" the musician asked, switching glances between two invited journalists. I motioned the competition to sit for his one-on-one first.}}} Prince had casually strolled into a backstage crew room seconds earlier. Diminutive and wispy thin, the artist still managed to look comfortably stylish in a tan silk shirt with thin colored stripes and tan slacks. His open shirt, unbuttoned past his chest, revealed some serious chest hair and a thick gold medallion the size of a drink coaster. Prince shook our hands and seemed eager to start chatting. Though sporting only a touch of makeup, he looked in person at least a decade younger than his 45 years. Fifteen minutes later, in Prince's dressing room, a photographer moved around the artist, his New Power Generation drummer and me like a hawk circling prey. As the photographer snapped away, Prince settled comfortably on a couch across from me and talked about his Maui home. He said he had visited the residence once a year for the last four years, "always around the same time." He confessed that he most enjoyed his annual visits because he liked the people and "because nobody's frontin' " in Hawai'i. Fond of occasionally dropping unannounced into Maui nightclubs to catch — and sometimes sit in with — local musicians, Prince even remembered being moved enough to surprise O'ahu reggae band Natural Vibrations with an on-stage guitar instrumental at Kihei's Bada Bing! in December 2001. On the subject of his recent selection for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, Prince commented that while the nomination was something of an honor, such awards were "not important to me" in the overall scheme of things. The honor, he said, was being in the company of musicians already inducted. Prince said he would perform at the March 15 induction ceremonies in New York, if invited, but felt sorry "for whoever they choose to go on after me." Longish tendrils of dark hair framing his forehead danced as he chuckled at his comment. The testiest moment of our chat came when I quizzed him about his recent decision to do "hit-loaded" live shows after years of virtually ignoring audience favorites on stage. This was also when I found out that Prince does indeed read his own press. "I'm not doing it because I need the cash," Prince said sternly, after commenting on news stories (including one I'd written for The Advertiser's TGIF section last Friday) that suggested the artist was looking to feather his retirement nest egg with the guaranteed cash of a "greatest hits" tour. He pointed out that he already had more money in his bank account than he needed, thanks to ownership of the publishing rights for his vast hits catalog and new music created outside of his famously strained relationship with former record label Warner Bros. Recent hit-heavy shows, he said, were practice runs designed to prepare his New Power Generation band for larger American and international tours planned for the near future. The shows were purposely scheduled in Hong Kong, Australia and Hawai'i to keep them "far away from the press and the cameras," Prince explained. But he still hadn't explained why he wanted to dive deeply into his hits catalog in a live setting after so many years. So I asked him ... again. "You've asked me that in three different ways," Prince said testily. "Why do you think I'm playing the songs?" I answered that I didn't know. "You know why," he insisted. I assured him I didn't, and asked him to explain. He was visibly uncomfortable, searching for an answer; it was best to move on. I chose a query about music he was currently grooving to. His brown eyes widening with very real pride, he mentioned musical projects that members of New Power Generation were working on. After copping to a fondness for the track "Powerless" from Nelly Furtado's recently released CD "Folklore," Prince shook my hand and I exited the room. Later, as I was being denied permission to watch his rehearsal and to commit my mental notes to paper within Blaisdell Arena, I noticed Prince alone by the freight entrance, dancing to blasts of live funk drifting from NPG's dressing room. His lithe frame swayed gently to the beat. His designer shoes tapped loudly on the Blaisdell's concrete floor. As I exited, a Blaisdell security guard informed me, "You're lucky, man. I haven't seen anybody talk with him alone like that yet. Was he cool?" Well, he wasn't frontin'. Reach Derek Paiva at dpaiva@honoluluadvertiser.com

[This message was edited Thu Dec 18 17:49:19 PST 2003 by TonyC] I don't know how stupid a question it was. Throughout his career, Prince has distanced himself from old songs as if they were, at turns, heretic, boring or no longer representative of who he was... blah blah blah. ONAL- and Emancipation-era interviews or recorded comments bear this out. Now, he's playing them, once again. Lil' Man's always hated to be called out on his inconsistencies. He's lucky to have faced a reporter in the know enough to recognize the inconsistency. Maybe he's a fan.

It was a stupid question because the answer is obvious...those are the songs that people most want to hear, so he is playing them. What...is he going to play NEWS instead and disappoint people so badly that they never come back to see him on future tours?
Also, what are you talking about with him "distancing himself from old songs"? He's almost always played a good number of "old songs" in each of his tours. He almost always plays Purple Rain every single tour. I've never felt that he was ignoring his old stuff when he toured except for maybe the Purple Rain tour when he played little old stuff from his first four albums.

I'm not suggesting he play NEWS, believe me. LOL But, if consumer satisfaction were a priority with ol' P, his club would be a lot more successful. Who knows why he's playing old music. Maybe his old songs are far better than his newer ones, and he knows it. Also, what are you talking about with him "distancing himself from old songs"? 4 Those keepin track of the tour, and all thats been accordingly happening in the press, Its clearly been stated numerously throughout Singapore,Hong Kong, Australia and Hawaii(possibly not as much in Hawaii) that this tour was to retire all his old jammies. Even when his tour was only a rumour, it was big and bold in all the head lines, over and over again, that these songs were gonna b put 2 rest, so im guessing he was sick of repeating himself.Maybe there isnt Joy in repetition after all.

Prince seemed 2 B in a sharing type, talkative frame of mind. COOL. Non-cryptic, not frontin', just tellin' it like it is! How "groovy" is that? 2 groovy! I dont think? many of us? at least ME, knew he had a home on the islands, yet we know he loves hawaii. He was VERY honest, with stating WHY he had played these "FAR AWAY" places with strange melodies...( 2 avoid the press & practice ) I'm sure the "fans" there werent thrilled with THAT statement. Another peice of great news is his plans 2 tour the states SOON. He NEVER stops working it hard! Plus it seems like he's very happy with whats he's got up his sleeve 4 2004 in the way of HIS "new music". The comment on him feeling sorry 4 who comes on stage AFTER HIM, at the HALL of FAME affair was too cute. I think that goes 4 who precedes him as well...He'll definately OUTDO them ALL, imho. I am sooo pleased 2 hear that HE will not ONLY ATTEND the hoopla, but will PERFORM. GOOD 4 U Prince! Show em' what U got! I ALWAYS felt prince had enough money 2 quit IF he had wanted 2, and that he performs & continues to, 4 his own pleasure & love of music. So by that, (broken down) I mean what he gives us is cuz he WANTS to, not HAS to. He can B pretty humble, but his arrogance ( as a true GEMINI, like me ) always pours forth too. I guess he earned that, & 4 the ppl who havent attended, leaving MANY seats vacant, is just "ying yang", or who cares? He dont, I dont, he's got his loyal fan base & thats enough 4 him & 4 us lucky people who remain loyal to him, through all his musical directions & talents. He just is sooo fascinating & down 2 earth! Thanx prince. Just let it "flow" and keep that talent/gift of yours comin' 2 us who really appreciate U! U know who we R! May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love.

Since when does Prince do what people want him to do, musically? In recent years one of the most oft repeated phrases is "Prince does what he wants and if the fans don't like it they can move on". He and the NPGMC (and the FAMS) are always going on and on about how Prince doesn't care what people think, etc.

problem q #1 - 'y tour and play songs no one knows (except his hardcore fans)'...problem q #2 -'Y play only his hits...hasn't he got new music?' blah blah and on it goes...with press like that...what the hell is he supposed 2 do...I saw his sydney show this year and I saw the show last time he played in sydney (1992 4 those who don't know how long it was between tours waaay downunder!) amd both shows were xcellent...but I gotta say I thought the 2003 xperience was just brilliant...the soundcheck was awesome...and the show was even better -even though I wasn't as close 2 the stage (centre row 1 at soundcheck -4th row in concert)...but on both tours it was completely different...I mean u can't compare this show with the hit n run shows of a few years ago either...the band he has at present is sooo much better... - not only the fact it shows how good a musician he is - but his mannerisms seem more natural...I'd love 2 see another lovesexy type show...but I don't know...the 2003 tour seemed to b so...private...its just a sad state of the music biz, that he isn't noticed anymore...maybe next year...but it'll b on prince's terms - not ours or the media's...and 4 that I commend Prince...i don't always agree with his ways...but its his life...and he's got the balls 2 do things his way...he just needs 2 work out that all his fan/ms want from him is 2 b happy, keep surprising us with his music and keep growing artistically (and listen 2 what we say 2 improve the club...we just want 2 help him don't we?...every1 has bad days/songs/albums...but I challenge any1 2 find 1 album with not 1 song of interest on it...including NEWS! I agree I am not as excited about his music as I used 2 b...but thats cos I am not a kid anymore and I have grown..I was spoilt during the 80's and now I seem 2 hunger 4 those days again...but I wonder if I was the age I am now...with the xperience i have behind me now...back then...would I have been just as excited? I wonder...maybe not...as prince says 4 the muse 2 hit...both the listener and the performer must be in synchronisation...and now that I am 'full grown, have a wife and child etc etc...I don't have as much time/room in my life 4 prince - not like when I was a teenager...so is it all prince's fault that sometimes Icrave somethin 'more'...I don't think so...I just want 2 say thanx P 4 the music so far...and I will continue 2 listen and learn from yr experiences...my life is enriched because of your music and 4 that I thank u...plus - 1 more thing...I am enriched by yr music/vision...but I ain't rich financially...so please remember that when u set the price 4 next years club...cos I know I won't have the benefits of the club next year that I did have this year...ie a concert only a couple of thousand kilometres away in australia ( I am in New Zealand BTW) so 2 raise the price next year would annoy the 'sh-t' out of me - unless there was MORE than 1 album and a cd 4 the same price...

He's playing his hits again "after so many years"???
1990 Nude tour- pretty much a hits show 1992 D&P tour- First half focuses on the D&P album, the second half on hits 1993 Act One tour- First half focuses on album. the second half on hits 1993 Act Two tour- Plays requests from the fans, mostly hits 1997-1998 Jam Of The Year tour- Guess what?? A greatest hits show with a few fan favorites (the tour becomes more hits-laden as it progresses). 1999- All the shows he played during the Rave era (including Rave Un2 The Year 2000) are, you guessed it, full of hits. 2000-2001 Hit and Run Tour- Another greatest hits tour. hmmm, so other than his LAST tour, and a few shows in the mid-nineties to support "Come" and TGE, ALL of his tours since 1990 have been heavily soaked in hits. What gives with the idea that he isn't playing hits??? Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. Thank you. It was an uninformed question to begin with. I agree. I don't really think this journalist had a real clue. He probably heard something about how the ;last tour was mostly album cuts, and just assumed that all his recent tours were like this. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

Even when his tour was only a rumour, it was big and bold in all the head lines, over and over again, that these songs were gonna b put 2 rest, so im guessing he was sick of repeating himself.Maybe there isnt Joy in repetition after all.
I had 2 meet n greets in Australia with Prince and the question was asked BOTH times... Prince said - I am NOT gonna retire my hits, i wrote them, i like them, they're MY songs... when we asked why the press was saying that, he said - "They have to get publicity somehow dont they? - they have to sell tickets..." (referring to the promoter)... so i believe him - i think it IS just one big rehearsal for a world tour... i dunno... i feel kinda not myself today....

Me too CherrieMoon. Two things that I read in this story that made me LOL: 1) "Who's the first patient?" the musician asked, switching glances between two invited journalists. I motioned the competition to sit for his one-on-one first. 2) On the subject of his recent selection for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, Prince commented that while the nomination was something of an honor, such awards were "not important to me" in the overall scheme of things. The honor, he said, was being in the company of musicians already inducted. Prince said he would perform at the March 15 induction ceremonies in New York, if invited, but felt sorry "for whoever they choose to go on after me." Prince sure does have a great sense of humor. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
