Temptation4U's Detroit review #3 I am just getting home from the Prince show and afterparty in Detroit Michigan and I am still in disbelief at the string of luck that I have had. After going to see Prince perform for over 20 years, this is the first time that I had front row tickets (Even camping out for his performances, I never managed to get past the 20th row on the floor. Much praise to the NPGMC!!!!
I was a little sceptical when the lights dimmed for the opening acts, The Funky Baldheads. The reason being is that a lot of what I read was not that positive or encouraging of this band. I beg to differ. I think that they are band of highly skilled musicians and Kip's voice over the jazz, hip hop, R & B, old school fusion...they were fantastic. Its funny that everyone wanted to compare the caucasion in the group to Eminem...the only thing they have in common are skin color and both are talented. The MC reminded me of the days when I would go to hip hop night at The Shelter ( a local venue in Detroit where Prince sometimes played upstairs). He had a great stage performance, and I could barely contain my laughter when he grabbed a two different securtity guards bald heads in "symbolism". The guards were into the show as much as the paying customers....but I cannot blame them! Kip kept making eye contact with my friend and myself.....showing love as we were showing love and appreciation for the show that we were seeing. The main event of the night of course was Prince.....and we were treated to the second set playlist that is mentioned many times on other post. The playlist includes but is not limited to Bambi, Take Me With You, Starfish and Coffee, U Got The Look, Purple Rain, and If I was your Girlfriend. One thing that you could tell was all of the love and postitive energy flowing from the main floor, mainly NPGMC. About an hour into the show, one of Prince's entourage pointed at my friend Vikki ( wearing a purple linen suit with matching heels and sun glasses) and asked her to join the band on stage. I could not believe what was happening! My friend was the first lady in her group onstage and Prince danced and played guitar for about ten minutes, with a stage filled with delighted ladies! When my friend came back everyone cheered for her in support. I did not think that the night would get any better, but it did. During Prince's piano segue...he kept making eye contact with our side of the stage. He kept remarking how good it was to be "at his second home". He was dressed to the nines in a purple outfit trimmed in gold, with gold and purple heels. As he was talking with the audience, he produced a purple towel with his former symbol embroidered in gold. As he was talking to the crowd, directly in front of me, I waited for a pause, and asked "May I have that towel?". He paused and turned away taking a few steps and threw the towel over his shoulder directly at me. He turned to see me catch it and he smiled in approval. As the concert drew to a close, Prince began a medley. I had been waiving at Millenia and Geneva all night (the perks of close seats), and was stunned when one of the members of Millenia came and asked me to join them and Prince and The NPG on stage. For reference to those who attended , big "brown" guy with long pony tail. I quickly went up on stage and began dancing with all I had. Geneva came over to me and started dancing with me for at several minutes. I alternated dancing with Geneva and members of Millenia through the medley until the finale Gett Off! Geneva was so beautiful.....the pictures I have seen do not do her justice and to say she is limber and graceful is an understatement. The afterparty was $25 bucks at the Olympia Room. It was a decent crowd, with the DJ from Funky Baldheads on the turn table. Prince was in a reserved room right off of the Olympia room and came into our room often, going to the DJ which was almost in the middle of the floor. Prince was trying to relax and vibe with the crowd, but there was a bit to much crowding and pushing. I had another opportunity meet Prince at Mayte's Dance Troup Tour...he was walking around the lobby of The Music Hall, allowing people to approach him. The difference was they didn't crowd him at once. By backing off a little, more people got the chance to meet him. I am not trying to preach or anything, its just worked for me and I want all true fans to get the chance to meet him! Anyway, at the afterparty I got a chance to meet Mr. Hayes (very silly) and Kip from the NPG and Funky Baldheads. He told me that he saw me in the front row and onstage and he appreciated all the positive love that I was showing the tour. That was so cool. I also talked to Millenia and thanked them for the chance to dance with them. (Some over zealous security guard refused to let two of the members of Millenia to Prince's area, after they came out to mingle with fans. The guard even shoved one of the beautiful ladies, almost landing her into a glass door.) I hope that she doesn't hold that against Detroit. I posted this wanting to thank Prince and The NPG and Funky Baldheads for kicking ass in Detroit!!!!! | |
