Celebration Wrapup Comments

The major events and Prince appearances at the Celebration have been covered for the most part over the last week.

Just to mention that Prince appeared at the end of the Celebration at the DJ area. He rounded off the evening by talking for about 3-4 minutes to all who remained - my paraphrase follows.

He talked about how he had enjoyed the week and wanted to thank:

1. The artists who had appeared. he apologised for the sound during Nikka Costa set, adding that someone would get killed tomorrow and we could read about it in the Star Tribune

2. Attendees (he said he valued diverse people from different corners of the world gathering together to make the week i.e. rainbow children). He commented that he could see no reason not to do a Celebration ever year.

Reference was made to activities during the week, including the Listening Party discussions which he described as 'heavy'. But he also commented that he valued these events because it helped him keep in touch with what his core audience wanted.

He talked about 'The Work' being the need to ensure artists have ownership over their creations. He referred to Curtis Mayfield dying last year before he had ownership. He cited Hendrix, whose first record was 'dope' and therefore didn't have need of a record company to do it their way. But Hendrix also died without his masters.

In this sense, he said he was like Mayfield and Hendrix (i.e. not out of arrogance but because of the contractual terms that had control of their master recordings.) So Prince's task, he said, was to regain control of his works during his own lifetime.

He added that the Music Club was an attempt to do things in a different way and by supporting it, people were contributing to 'The Work'.

Finally, he said it had been a long week, so he was going home to let his foot get some rest.
