Prince Blazes "Purple House" on Hendrix Tribute CD

{{{Confirming past rumours, Prince is contributing "Purple House" to an all-star Jimi Hendrix tribute CD due in May 2004. I wonder if it's the live version from the "Rave" DVD, or a new studio version? Either way, it's sure to give non-Prince fans a slap upside the head!

Here's the article from Billboard.com, and I like the way they gave our man top billing. A little respect for Hall of Fame members, don't cha know...

Prince, Clapton 'Power' New Hendrix Tribute
by Wes Oshorski for Billboard.com

A Jimi Hendrix tribute disc being spearheaded by the rock icon's half-sister Janie will feature a previously unreleased Stevie Ray Vaughan medley, as well as newly recorded covers from Prince, George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, Eric Clapton, Musiq and several others.

Titled "Power of Soul," after Hendrix's song of the same name, the disc will benefit the United Negro College Fund. Due May 4 by Los Angeles-based Image Entertainment and in conjunction with Experience Hendrix, the album contains a 1983 live Vaughan medley of "Little Wing" and "Third Stoen From the Sun," Musiq's cover of "Are You Experienced?," Eric Gales doing "Foxy Lady" and Prince's reimagination "Red House" as "Purple House."

Songs from Sting, Santana, John Lee Hooker, Earth, Wind & Fire, Chaka Kahn with Kid Rock guitarist Kenny Olson, Sounds Of Blackness, George Duke, Cee-Lo and Robert Randolph and the Family Band are also due for inclusion.

"Power of Soul" is certainly not the first Hendrix tribute. Aside from smaller, more independent celebrations, Warner Bros. issued in the early 1990s a high-profile Hendrix tribute titled "Stone Free," with covers from Soundgarden, the Cure, Clapton, Buddy Guy, Seal and Belly.

"A lot of the tribute albums that have come out have concentrated on Jimi's rock side. This is really more of the soul, R&B feel," Janie tells Billboard.com. She says it's a project she's envisioned all her life, noting that it was in R&B where Jimi really paid his dues. "He was in chitlin-circuit bands and playing with Diana Ross, the Isley Brothers, Little Richard, all them. So, I'm just trying to shed that light, too."

All songs, with the exception of the Hooker's previously issued version of "Red House," are new. Janie says that she had approached Hooker about recording a new cover prior to his 2002 death, but he was physically unable to because of his declining health.

She adds that a major Hendrix DVD is in the works for late next year, but declined to give details.

I hope it is a live aftershow version I´ve heard.

P makes a really fine guitar work, enjoying it. Blackwell on the drums moves from groove to groove and speciall when Maceo is called to stage and P calls (I think) Johny Lang to sing some lyrics, make the whole version really enjoyable, at least for us, prince fans.

Can´t wait to get that CD!!! Hendrix lives...
Actually this was not bad...

So check this out!

Actually I origionally thought that this was going to be a whole tribute album by prince. That really would have set the rock world on fire. The brother is just amazing. More power to him.

- I hope not Rave 2000 version. That one was nice, but he improved as a guitar player in the last years and his band is a lot better after Blackwell entered the NPG. I think a studio version would be so cool, a la ´Habibi´...smile
Prince is the right guy to play a tribute to Hendrix. I hope his version is sharp and right to the point...so falsettos, no speeches...only a kick ass guitar in homage to the Master

Wow this is gonna b great!
I know Prince does a fine rendition of 'Red House', but I also wonder what he would do with 'Machine Gun' and 'Purple Haze'...

well in fact there is no one else more fitting for a project like this. All props to Prince.

Yeah I would think he would do Purple Haze. Seems more fitting. Though he does try clear of the purple rain stuff, but he is doing purple house. Whats he gonna do with the syllable change?
