Day4 Report CELEBRATION DAY 4-----Report
I went in for my listen to "The Rainbow Children" and group discussion today (Prince wasn't there). Unfortunately the daily open house was cancelled,as was the movie for today "Under the Cherry Moon." Man, people were pissed about that. Anyways.....The Rainbow Children here are my thoughts- This album is not overtly commercial or designed for radio whatsoever. So all y'all who complained and bitched about "Rave" being "too commercial" and not experimental enough should be silenced by the "Rainbow Children". Prince is definitely sounding fresh and inspired on this. It's hard to explain the album's sound. It's part age of aquarius, part jazz, part rock opera, part funk. Honestly the album is not anymore religious than "lovesexy". But, if people are nitpicking to find religion on this album you will. Prince uses a lot of metaphors and there is definitely a strong love/sex/God on this album. This album is definitely big and bold, but don't be afraid it is definitely Prince. The lyrics are actually deep, clever, sexual, and Prince is very humorous too. There are two stand out dance trax thar are very funky a sexy little bedroom ballad, hard rock, jazz and rck-opera. As far as complaints about lyrics like-"eat a leaf." This is sang in a funny way. The lyrics aren't simple they are complex and interesting. So to recap: The album is bold, "experimental", funky, and no more spiritual than Prince has been before. Highlights include: Bob George as the narrator, the return of the New Breed, the seamless blending of musical styles, and this line as spoken by Prince: "U know, this is funky but I just wish he'd play like he used 2, old scragglyhead..." He knows he can't please everyone. So funk on. | |
