Stand Back No.31 in UK Charts this week

History lesson time, I love these. Stand Back began life as a Stevie Nicks track, the product of an otherwise fruitless collaboration between Prince and the Fleetwood Mac singer. The track's purple connections made it something of a cult favourite in certain clubs and was a staple of the set of legendary DJ Larry Levan.

Linus Loves decided to pay tribute to this and remake the track in 21st century style, but having no ready access to a singer at first just turned the track in to an instrumental entitled The Terrace. The football connotation of the title made it a perfect choice as the music bed for the BBCs Football Focus, an exposure which further helped the track gain mainstream attention.

With a label clamouring to sign it for a full blown commercial release, it meant Loves now had the resources to bring the track back to its roots and so the lyrics have now been restored, turning The Terrace back into a fully fledged cover version of Stand Back. The vocals in question come thanks to Sam Obernick whose voice should sound very familiar as she famously featured on Tim Deluxe's 2002 radio staple It Just Won't Do.

omg this is like the best song ever written for another person after Nothing Compares 2 U.

I hear it all the time on the radio and I know people who hate Stevie Nicks but love this song.

Pretty sure the bulk of it was written by Miss. Nicks herself and that Prince (and if he really wrote anything becuause it is still foggy) gave her that keyboard part. I would sing it if I could but you know it. Excellent song whether Prince had anything to do with it or not.

prince wrote nothing...he came in and played the synth and walked out of stevies life forever...

If Prince wrote nothing, then why does he receive royalties from it???

However, Nicks obviously considers Prince's contribution (whether that be by way of inspiration or something musically more substantive is precisely unclear), sufficiently to have it acknowledged at the ASCAP office where the sing is registered for publishing purposes as co-written by Prince. and so he also receives payment.

Whether Prince actually co-wrote the song is unclear. What is clear is that he is credited with having done so. Similarly, to the best of my knowledge, it isn't exactly clear that Prince's father, John L Nelson, actually co-wrote 'Around The World In A Day' with David Coleman and Prince, but he still shares co-writing credit.
