All things music: USA TODAY's Elysa Gardner

Relevant excerpt:
Arlington, VA: Do you think Prince will get in the Hall of Fame with his first attempt? Being a long time fan, I am sure the voters will no doubt see the impact he has had on contemporary music.

Elysa Gardner: Well, he was certainly at the top of my list. Then again, I don't understand why they haven't inducted ABBA or Chic yet. The Hall is very rock-centric -- though they tend to be more embracing of R&B in general than disco specifically, or anything they perceive as light pop

Or The Brady Bunch, or The Partridge Family, or the New Kids On The Block, or Rick Dees for "Disco Duck" or the guy that sang "Pacman Fever".

You know we can now describe the world's taste in "McMusic" as what the general 8 to 16 year old is interrested in. People are in such a hurry to do everything now days that they are to lazy or uninterested that they can't explore different types of music. Just turn on the radio and put up with whatever is on.

Of course Prince should make it into the Hall of Fame on his first try. Even if you do not follow or particularly enjoy the man's music you cannot deny his tallent. There is no one that I have seen live that evokes such joy and feeling in their music. His music tallents are endless. He "is" music culture, bucking the norm, exciting, and changing.

What else needs to be proven by this man?

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is just a way for the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce to raise revenue and put money in their pockets. It is always nice when anyone recognizes Prince for his contribution to music, but dont' forget that it's not a big deal whether he gets in or not.

I live in Cleveland.. and I have NEVER gone through the R&R Hall of Fame..

first off they put it in a spot which is sooo dumb!!! They put in near the lake which is fine, but they put in on this little piece of land in which half of the building is in the lake and the front in on the actual land??? (DOING THIS you can never expand it??? There is NO room to make it bigger?) so dumb!

also basically the R&R Hall of Fame is a The Hard Rock Cafe without Hamburgers lol

BUT for the lists of people in I mean come on??? When they put Michael Jackson in as a Solo Artist?? when this guy about 90% of the time LIP SYNCS everywhere? How do we know he is the one singing? How do we know with all those nose jobs he can sing in key? Letting him in..that open the door for all this NON Musicans like Justin Timberlake,Brintey Spears,Madonna & etc.. I think the worst part of MJ's induction was when he did his speach with a FAKE cast on his leg.. because he knew that you have to perform there LIVE and we never see him doing anything with his mic on??? So MJ said "there will be NO moonwalking"?? (someone yelled out SING!) but he laughed it off.. Hey isn't MJ being inducted into the ROCK & ROLL Hall of Fame??? and not the Dance Hall of Fame?

But also for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to NOT have.. the band HEART in there?? thats insane!

wow???

I personally dont care if Prince gets in.. who cares? It does seem like the "music industry" is trying to erase Prince for it's past.

BUT I would LOVE to see Prince blow all those average Guitar Players away LIVE when he is inducted!

Prince is the epitamy of what should be rock n' roll. He has evrything that all the greats have, spontanety, ambition, attraction, and above all, talent!! Unfortunately we live in a world where music today is determined by who looks hotter in their video or who has the catchiest hook in their track. It depresses me that my generation has grown up listening to 'fast-food music' rather than the 'artistic cuisine' that was so abundant twenty years ago.

It doesn't seem fair that the previous generation got to experience the greatness of Prince, the Sex Pistols, ZZ Top, and all the other great artists that we still refer to today. What do we get? Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake...the list goes on. I'm just saying we need more quality artists to break up the monotany. I know that they're out there. They just need to be discovered. Here's an example: Has anyone ever heard of Cody ChesnuTT? What about Remy Shand?
See my point?
Strange, but I'm more comfortable around you naked.

Cody ChesnuTT is AMAZING live. With the exception of his "testifying", he is a STAR! Funny thing is his album "Headphone Masterpiece" does NO justice to his voice. This guy can sing live. I guess he just recorded it a long time ago.

If he comes to your town, I implore you to see him. He is definately at the forefront of new music.

Music snobs that know zilch about music. Don't you just love them?

For the record: not liking Chic is against Prince's teachings. Check out the Sexy MF clip, in which they're holding up a "Chic" sign. Of course, there's plenty of Chic in Prince's music, and they are an awesome act, who's main members are also involved in dozens of great, classic albums. You should check out a BBC documentary series on the history of pop songs, the one dealing with "recent" pop music has got Nile Rogers talking at length on the beautiful simplicity of Madonna's "Like A Virgin", which he produced: 16 channels on the mix board and they didn't even use them all.

Oh, and Jill Jones also worked with Chic in the late 1990s.

http://www.warr.org/chic.html

Abba are a fabulous pop band and are responsible for more great pop songs than most overrated muso artists ever will admit to.

I live in Cleveland too, and you're not missing much by not going to the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. I have been there several times, and they did not have one thing of Prince in there, which is laughable in itself. rolleyes

I also would love to see Prince blow away the other guitar players when and if he does get inducted. I also hope that the Hall of Fame gets their act together and has kind of Prince memorabilia in it.

If Prince does NOT get inducted, I am going to call the Hall of Fame the "Hall of Shame", since Prince deserves this induction more than the other nominees.

Excuse me? The Stooges are far more IMPORTANT than Prince. So is Patti Smith. Gram Parsons invented an entire genre. And what about the Sex Pistols!

Culturally they are-people copy the style but not musically-the Sex Pistols can only be copied literally-Prince can be taken in so many ways. he has changed beats-affected how backing vocals are layered. And also how people could be eclectic. He also has a distinctive guitar rift such as on Cream-you cam hardly read a review or hear something without a prince influence-most R&B-even Beck.Even tedious pratts like Phil Collins have been influenced and all of them will tell you as such.

BS. Prince is a copyist: 60% of Prince = Sly Stone. His guitar playing? Santana. References to Prince are often lazy and ill-informed.
