No but the Star Tribune is hardly The New York Times, I'll wait for the official announcement before I get excited for Prince.

Why the fuck is everybody so stuck on Lenny & OutKast inducting him? whofarted Prince deserves to have someone w/ true & deep respect to induct him, a legend for a legend if you will - OutKast, Lenny & Beck can't even fit the bill collectively (furthermore, they'll probably go SUPER trendy & have that damn Alicia Keys do it ill )... NEXT!

OMG if West or Smiley can do it then the next person on THAT list would be Bryant Gumbel LOL

My vote goes to Larry Graham...

He is very important to Prince, and is his mentor.

With Hall of Fame induction looming, who would be fit for a Prince?
Jon Bream, Star Tribune
Published November 9, 2003 POP09

It's a lock: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will announce sometime in the next few days that Prince is one of its new inductees. Given his career, influence and impact, he is the most compelling choice on a ballot that includes John Mellencamp, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, George Harrison, the Sex Pistols, Bob Seger, Black Sabbath and Patti Smith, among others.

What's not certain is who will give Prince's induction speech at the ceremonies in March in a New York City hotel ballroom. Because the event is taped and edited for broadcast on VH1, the programming poobahs seem to have some sway when it comes to choosing presenters.

With all due respect to Paul Shaffer, who traditionally directs the live music for the induction ceremonies, we offer a Top 10 list of candidates to induct Prince.

10 Sly Stone. A Hall member, he was a major influence on Prince, and Sly's hybrid sound and coed, multiracial band also reflect Prince's approach. But Sly, a tortured genius, hasn't been heard from in years. A logical sub would be Sly & the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham. A giant among bass players, an R&B hitmaker and a close friend of Prince's (and fellow evangelizing Jehovah's Witness), Graham would be too obscure for the TV masses, however.

9 Carlos Santana. Another Hall of Famer and early influence on Prince. However, Santana's speeches tend to be lost in the spiritual ozone. Plus, Clive Davis, the record-label president who is a Hall of Famer himself, insists that Santana associate with young artists such as Michelle Branch.

8 George Clinton. In 1997, Prince gave the Hall of Fame induction speech for the Godfather of Funk, his friend and hero. As for a role reversal, well, Clinton's music speaks louder -- and more clearly -- than his words.

7 Chaka Khan. As a teen, Prince had posters of her on his bedroom walls. She scored a solo hit with an interpretation of his "Feel 4 U," but she isn't much more talkative than the shy Prince.

6 Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen. It would be a dream if Dylan, a fellow Minnesota maverick, inducted Prince, but Dylan isn't big on making speeches. However, Springsteen is, and he's been called upon to induct several Hall of Fame heavyweights, including Dylan and Roy Orbison. Both the Boss and Prince had their biggest albums ("Born in the U.S.A." and "Purple Rain") in 1984. Other than that, there isn't much of a connection -- musical or personal -- between them.

5 Joni Mitchell. Another Hall of Famer who influenced Prince. She didn't even show up for her own induction, so why would she turn up this time? Well, she did travel to Sheridan, Wyo., for the premiere of Prince's second film, "Under the Cherry Moon."

4 Beck. VH1 would love someone relatively young and hip like Beck. He's a funky cross-breeder of styles, and he often covers Prince songs in concert. But to VH1 programmers, he's so 1990s.

3 OutKast. This hip-hop duo is hot, hip and heavily influenced by Prince. But are they recognizable enough to VH1 viewers to honor the year's most prominent inductee?

2 Neil Young. Musically, this two-time Hall of Famer (both as a solo act and with Buffalo Springfield) has little in common with Prince. However, both are iconoclasts who travel to their own beat, thumbing their noses at major labels and even their own fans. That would make Young a fitting choice. But he has such an unfavorable view of VH1 that it's questionable whether he'd show up.

1 Lenny Kravitz. He and Prince are friendly enough to have jammed onstage and in the studio. He borrows from some of the same '60s/'70s influences that Prince did. VH1 loves him as much as he loves Prince. Just last year, the music network named Kravitz one of its "25 sexiest." And if he's still squiring Nicole Kidman come the March induction ceremony, his Q rating will be higher than Sly Stone could ever take you.

Kravitz, who launched his career as Romeo Blue as a tribute to you-know-who, is the one to induct His Purpleness.

i also like those ideas of bowie or quincy.those guys know from music and they speak well.stevie would be good ,but the speech would last 3 days.elton may be cool.maybe, since Tupac doesn't seem to be really dead they could get him to do it.or if he is dead he probably already recorded a prince induction speech since he seems to have recorded everything else before he died.

lol Too damn funny!!!

You may have something with Stevie. He's a good choice. It is still likely that it would be Lenny (if Prince even winds up getting inducted).

I think Patti LaBelle should do Prince's induction speech. She's a very good speaker and her and Prince are or were good friends.

HELLO?!?! NEIL YOUNG? WHAT THE @#$%?!?!

Have you people completely lost your freakin' minds? You forgot to include one of the most important people in Prince's family - THAT WOULD BE SHEILA E. God, folks, get a grip and remember your Prince history PLEASE! Who else (except possibly Eric Leeds, and he would also be worth considering, too) has continuously worked with him throughout his career, and who is currently working with him on his next album?

GREAT NEWS!!! Big huggy 4 Prince hug

Why dont they try and get MJ 2 do it??? It would be fitting for the so called "King of Pop" awarding the real King of Pop whilst trying hard not 2 let his lips fall of his face.

Out of the candiates I would say Sly Stone, would be great 2 hear that guy talk again.

Either him or Stevie for me.

I have a few ideas for whom to give the induction speech.

1. Ron Jeremy. They both like beautiful women, although Ron likes any woman, and P seems picky.

2. Mean Gene Okerland. He is from Minn. I think..

3. Eddie Murphy. Need I say more.

4. Chris Rock. As long as he can keep P from dressing up like and old guy.

5. Rick James. So he can vent about how a science fiction little punk made it big.

6. Will Smith. Hell he used the name to ge big...Fresh What???

and now my serious pick

7. Wendy and Lisa Maybe that could get them on stage together!!!

Congrats to Prince. As much as he deserves it, I didn't think he'd get in on the first try. I'm so glad to be proven wrong.
I think Andre 3000 would be the perfect choice to give the induction speech. Outkast is hot right now, and Prince is all over The Love Below.
And today's a holiday. No work. Double happiness!

Calhoun, who do you think would be good to do it?

This is the perfect occassion for Hendrix to come back from the dead woot!

Aside from that, Sly could come out of hiding & shock the world, that would be nice.

I really have no great ideas on this lol but I'm digging the Sheila/Santana suggestions. Hell, even Clapton could do it...
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

I am happy because Kravitz will be the speaker for Prince's induction ceremony. According to the list, who could speak about Prince, his music, and his influence on their ambition as well as Lenny can? He's a very good ChOICE.. I can't wait to watch it. It would be a crime for the camera man not to constantly show pictures of Prince in the audience listening because he will definately be in the crowd glowing. woot! This is your time baby!!! smile wink

I know this might come off as arrogant on Prince's part, but I think it would have a lot to say towards the machines of the music industry. I'm suprised someone else didn;t post thos prince should induct Prince into the hall of fame. It's completely Prince's style. Any arguments of value are welcomed.
