EDEN'S CRUSH, "Popstars" (London-Sire/143)

"Made for TV." It just sounds cheap. So does Eden's Crush. The vocal group's five members, all in their early 20s, were assembled for your viewing pleasure by the WB network for its "Popstars" show. The singers all are at least modestly good vocalists, but the group's debut album was hastily made without giving the singers a chance to develop their collective soul. The producers invested quite a bit of finesse to craft and polish the catchy first single "Get Over Yourself." Much of the rest of the album is unobjectionable and vague -- no songs to savor, but no objectionable ones, either. "Love This Way" is a ballad that builds a hypnotic spell with layers of vocals. Eden's Crush also grinds out a gurgling Britney Spears knockoff on "Two Way," then slides through a synthetic, and strangely sluggish, cover of Sheila E.'s "Glamorous Life." In other words, there's not much going on.
