Tricky's Prince influence... On choosing his 16 tracks for the album 'Back To Mine', Tricky lists Prince as an artist he would have liked to include...
"So there’s so much I had to leave out like Prince, not really any Michael Jackson, I never really listened to Michael Jackson it was more Prince, ‘Sign of The Times’ was a big influence, I love that song, but it was mostly the 1999 album and the earlier stuff I didn’t really get and then his later stuff I didn’t really get." i remember after Maxinquaye 1st dropped, he was interviewed and they asked him who he would most like to work with.
he said the only artist he wanted to collaborate with was Prince and that he was going to fly to MPLS and camp outside of Paisley Park until he agreed to work with him.

i read an article once where prince was asked about tricky and his album "pre-millenium tension".
prince said "pre-millenium tension?"...sounds like another way of saying "1999" to me?

i remember when the girls ("the girls meaning Wendy and Lisa, not these girls") worked with him.
They talked about how all he wanted to do was sit in a corner, smoke weed and let them do all the work. And Prince should work with him? There's only been one Tricky, and he aint it.

He's an awesome British performer with 5 brilliant albums under his belt. Sort of the male counterpart to Bjork.

I've said this elsewhere, but after a Tricky show one night I spent a long time talking to him about Prince. My friend and I even gave him a copy of Crystal Ball. He was thrilled!

I've seen Tricky live in Paris and it was probably one of my greatest musical experience...a trip like no other.
He is definitely one of the most inspired musician live today. But if you really want to understand what this guy and his music are about you absolutely must GET STONED before or during the show...this is the condition.

LOL!!
So Tricky is still raving on about Prince then?! His stuff was prominent in my early 90's music experiences, and I did love his influence in Massive Attack, but he is one seriously f***ed up dude. There is NO WAY Prince could work with him. Tricky is the biggest drugged up music whore prevalent today! It would be an insult to such finery as Prince to even contemplate putting him through that. Argh!

Tricky is an amazing live show. His music is actually better live. To listen to his records (like someone said, you have to be high...) only if you are not weak-minded and easily influenced. Otherwise you may end up in some funky mood and possibly borderline depressed. If you get past that then he is great to listen to (it's definately mood music). ) As far as what Prince could learn from Tricky. He could learn to be daring once again with his music. Every Tricky album, he pushes himself in a new direction, and is heavy on new sounds and layering (like Prince in the early days) which makes perfect sense that SOTT is his favorite Prince record. Pick up Tricky's A Ruff Guide, which is a greatest hits package, it's a good starter. Tricky is also heavy on b-sides (remember when Prince did those?) and also alternate versions of his songs. Not just slightly different versions, I mean total reworkings of the songs, sometimes you don't even recognize it's the same song...

There should be a full stop after 'earlier stuff'. he's saying he didn't get the later stuff. "London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"
"YEAH!!!" "Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"

I don't think they should work together, but I would really really like to hear Tricky remix some Prince. If you haven't heard him you're missing out, if Prince said "Pre-millenilum tension" is another way of saying "1999" he's wrong wrong wrong, unless he means it's a bold, original piece of work that will continue to live on long after the artist ceases to be relevant to the masses. I'm dissapointed that anyone on this board would insult Tricky or say he's somehow too fucked up to work with prince. As much as I don't think prince should work with any other artists, a Tricky/Prince collaboration would be much better than the Sheryl Crow, Gwen Stefani, Doug E Fresh or even Chuck D collaborations we've had to suffer through.
