3rd report from Kansas City Hit n Run

What an unbelievable show I witnessed in KC last night.

This was the 3rd time I had seen him. April 1993 in Chicago and Jan. 1998 in KC the other. This was far and away the best. And let me also say that he played an 8,300 seat arena and they had to release another 1,000 SRO tickets a few days before the show.

The place was packed and ELECTRIC! He took the stage at 9:25 after playing a little bit with the Fonky Baldheads who I thought were pretty cool. Did the Uptown/Controvesy/Mutiny opening as expected. it sounded great and had the look of the old Dirty Mind video.

He tore through most of the songs that have been set staples on this tour, but I was suprised to hear that he was playing a few more songs to near entirety. After seeing him in '98 I was disappointed because he didn't seem to have the energy I expected. This time was totally different.

He was bumping and grinding all over the place with Geneva (my God that girl can bend!) The Beautiful Ones looked almost like it was straight out of the movie. And he played much more guitar than the other times I had seen him. I shouldn't say played, I should say SHREDDED the guitar. He is the best guitarist around-bar none, and this is coming from a heavy metal fan.

After hearing reports that he only played 1:35 in Baltimore, I was expecting him to take off after he finished the 1st encore with Purple Rain. But this crowd was so insane, there was no way he was leaving. Everyone was pounding the seats making the place literally shake.

He came back with U got The Look, which really caught me off guard because I had not heard of him playing it recently. After bring 15-20 people onstage he finished off with a rocking rendition of Gett Off.

After jamming for about 7-8 minuted he got into the middle of the crowd and layed his guitar down while it was still going. He
started kneeling down like Hendrix while keeping his foot on the wah peddle to make the sound distortion keep coming back. When he rose up the sound would increase. Very cool effect to end the show.

I was also shocked to see him wearing a white and black basketball jersey with a yellow 7 on it during the last encore. Definately different for him.

When he finally left it was 11:40. 2 hours and 15 minutes of high energy rock n' roll the way it was supposed to be played.

On behalf of Kansas City prince, Thank You!!

It was a night to remember.
