Beastie Boys, Sarah McLachlan, The Artist, and Public Enemy Take Top Honors
at the Yahoo! Internet Life Magazine Online Music Awards

Celebrities, Record Label Execs., and Technology Leaders Celebrate the Best
of the Web

NEW YORK, July 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Amidst a ground-shaking quake in the
music industry surrounding the download of digital music files over the
Internet, a star-studded cast of influential celebrities, high-powered
recording industry moguls, and major players from Silicon's Alleys and Valleys
held court last night in Manhattan's Studio 54 for the second annual Yahoo!
Internet Life Magazine Online Music Awards.

Remembered most affectionately as the epicenter for 70's chic, Studio 54's
buzz yesterday evening was a long way from Bianca Jagger's bare-backed
entrance on a white mare. Rather, a new breed of music celebrity, the Web
site creator, was rubbing elbows with the titans of popular music. As
record executives spoke of copyright protection, tech gurus outlined the
finer points of the Secure Digital Music Initiative, and artists such as the
one formerly known as Prince, Public Enemy, Seal, and Wyclef Jean tied the
whole thing together with rousing performances of their latest
"Internet-available" hits. The Artist stole the show with a thirty-minute
performance, backed by former members of Sly and the Family Stone and James
Brown Saxophonist Maceo Parker.

What's more, some of the most powerful names in music and technology were
out in force as sponsors of the event. Names like Microsoft Windows Media
Technologies(TM) led the long list of sponsors, making it clear that a
historic shift in the music industry is taking form.

"The event was a spectacular success," notes Yahoo! Internet Life Magazine
Publisher Paul Turcotte. "This was the first time that all of the key
players involved in the online music movement -- people with real influence --
were able to come together in one forum to celebrate those pioneers who are
leading the charge in this revolution. "

"It took 40 years for radio to reach 50 million listeners. It took TV a
dozen years to do the same. The Internet has gotten there in only four
years," said Yahoo! Internet Life Magazine Executive Editor Ben Greenman.
"Think about the percentage of that audience that's hungry for music, and
then think about the way in which this medium allows for unprecedented,
direct delivery to individual fans. Format wars, industry realignments-all
those things are fascinating, but they can't obscure the fact that the music
industry has changed because of the Net, and that the change is
irreversible."

Nominees for the second annual Online Music Awards were chosen by the
Yahoo! Internet Life Magazine editorial staff in conjunction with votes
compiled from the magazine's readers. Winners were voted on by The Academy,
influential leaders in the music, online, and entertainment industries.
