3rd report from Baltimore Hit n Run

I went to the Baltimore show last night, and man was I disappointed. Maybe it's because I've seen him so many times lately, or it could be that he's been doing the same DAMN show for the past few years.

The setlist, which I'm sure will be posted accurately elsewhere here on the Org, was the same shit he played in Atlanta the first night, I believe. Only, he did NOT play U Make My Sun Shine. Everything else was the same.

Millenia (or however you spell it) came out first and did 3-4 songs. They're OK, nothing special. Just like all of the other girl groups out there. They were stiff on stage, but they at least could carry a tune. That's probably a first for Prince, bringing along a girl group that can actually sing a note or two.

Then, the Fonky Baldheads came on, and it was good to see and hear Mike Scott again, and the band was OK. Much better than I was anticipating, but Kip (who sometimes was barely audible; whassup with Prince's sound techs these days? He's trying to save too much money by skimpin' on good help) and DVS really need to go. That's all I'll say about that, but it was nice hearing Anotherloverholenyohead, but why can't Prince incorporate that into HIS set? The band itself was pretty good. Even Kirk was all right. I see those extra drumming lessons are paying off! smile

Then, Prince came out and did his now usual Uptown/Controversy/Mutiny jam! He needs to hang it up when it comes to Mutiny because he ain't got no rhthym guitar on it and it sounds too bass heavy. The 86-87 versions definitely put this to shame. As someone else said on AMP, he needs to pop in Birthday Parade to remind himself how it's supposed to be done.

Everything else was the same. The Work sounded as light and boring as it is on record, and the show ended with Purple Rain (yawn). I sat down (had 7th row seats) for many portions of the show, and for all of Purple Rain! He's just going through the motions now, and the NPG is now basically a cover band, doing all old songs, and doing them without any emotion at that.

Whatever happened to "Shut up already, DAMN!" in Housequake?? Is he too good to say even that now?!

This show didn't justify spending $168 on (2 tix), but that's just my not so humble opinion! I think people will be eventually disappointed with this same ol' shit, and just not go to the shows anymore! I know I wont! Hopefully then, he'll realize what talent he's wasting and do something and be hungry again!
