Andre "Ice Cold" 3000 talks about Prince again...

The Oct/Nov issue of Complex magazine conatins an article on Outkast where Andre mentions Prince (pretty funny), even though his memory fails him as far as getting a minor fact straight wink

Here is an excerpt from the article where it starts to discuss Andre's 1/2 of the new double album, The Love Below:

...the songs form a narrative, a loosely autobiographical story about an artistic, womanizing black man named Possum who lives in Paris thinking he can't ever fall in love- until he does. It's a very 'Under The Cherry Moon' construct, and infact, Andre seems to have unearthed a passion for Prince, whose open-minded, new wave-inspired funk spirit courses through 'The Love Below.'
Andre acknowledges Prince's influence, but says it was unconscious; the result of being under the Purple Spell from a really young age. "I had to be like 10 or 12 years old when I got 'When Doves Cry,' the single,"
Andre says. "The flipside was this thing called 'God,' which really scared me." So he took the record outside, placed it on the sidewalk, and "smashed it on the ground- it sounded creepy."

[By the way, the new Outkast album is pretty hot--especially Andre 3000's half... you gotta check it out. Some very Prince-like stuff... -Ben]

Yes it was. "17 Days" was the b-side of "When Doves Cry".

This is really weird because I knew somebody in high school who also destroyed their "PR"/"God" single in the same manner.
But he did it because he was a dumb redneck who didn't like the song.

To this day, "God" still creeps me out too. That has always been one of my least favorite songs of his, it's just so out there. His vocal screechings are just too much.

Whats so interesting to me is that when I listened to 'GOD' the very first time, I had the music very loud, and curious to see what this b-side song was all about...since I enjoyed the Instrumental in the movie 'Purple Rain' atleast I thought it was the same track...but while listening to Prince sing this song and hearing the music, had me looking behind me, making sure no one would creep up and scare the living day lights out of me, because it was a very strange and scary song to listen to as a child in my room...and not hearing anyone around me but Prince's scream...I find this fascinating that alot of us were very scared and creeped out when we'd listen to the song 'GOD' til this day, I won't listen to it unless I'm in a room full of people.

It has this strange effect on me alone...and I'd never listen to it in the dark...oh HELL NO!

It is a creepy song. A friend of mine who's father is a pastor threw the tape of the song out of the window of my friends car. His Dad found it offensive.

Did it ever occur to you that there would not be "A Love Below without Prince. I guess that would make Prince red hot.

I always liked GOD myself, I guess because of the deep range in it.
I still enjoy it to this day especially on the B-Side disk

I always loved that song. After I bought the 12" I played "God" incessantly, what made this track even more erie was that there was this heavy fog in my city for a Whole week! Being young and having a wild imagination, this made me believe that Prince possessed some strange power. demon

Exactly what is it that is so scarry? Didn't bother me at all when i heard it. And to smash it is such a silly reaction. That would be a rare collector's item now.

It's the heavy Hall reverb that freaks some people out.

Which goes to show you, there still ain't something so new that it won't draw comparisons yet in popular music.

Though it it nice to hear more Funk like music being released, too bad it comes as a Hip Hop package.

God is fabulous! Didn't creep me out one bit! I thought it was him trying musically to describe God.

It was a blues song in a way.

People stomp on records that they find go against their beliefs or are "scared" and threw out tapes out cars...those are the ones that creep ME out.

I've got a Munsters soundtrack around here somewhere...if anyone wants to stomp on scawy records... pumpkin

This is so funny. All of you Prince-peeps keep telling me this. But it is Big Boi's side that rocks my body.

Any Prince fan not impressed with the first five cuts of that album, esp Bowtie, must also not like George Clinton.

Andre's side is fun, but VERY busy, where Prince, in them ole days (the days you compare this album to), had focus points. Songs where you could take it easy.
Andre could use some pacing. You hear Prince's influence, but also R. Kelly's. Like Prince, Andre is a thief, Prince just packed into his own thang better than Andre does.

If you check some of the threads on Non-Prince Music (whatever it's called), I've said the very same thing about BB's disc, and "Church" in particular. This one, "BowTie", "Reset", and "Rooster" are quite blazin'!!!

God is great! (pun totally intended) I love the melody. I hate it when people try to compare other artists to Prince. I have found that in all my years (many, many years) of being a Prince fan one thing. Prince is often imitated, but never duplicated! Not to knock other Prince wannabes, but I don't think the comparison's are fair to Prince or the other artists. Whether or not you think Prince fell off from back in the day, you still can't start comparing him to others. If it wasn't for Prince, I'm pretty confident in saying Outkast would have no other direction to take their music other than mainline, stick to the old formula, hip hop.
I'm an org elitist... totally unapproachable.
