Summary of Sheila E television appearances Oprah: Sheila played percussion and sang backup for Jennifer Lopez's
performance of "If You Had My Love", very similar to the appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. Sheila got lots of camera time. Jennifer's vocals were mostly pre-recorded, but Sheila's voice could be heard clearly (although her percussion wasn't miked properly). Motown Live: Sheila only appeared during the final number, James Brown's "Sex Machine", performed with Eric Benet, Cherokee and Foxy Brown. Sheila sang vocals and only had a cymbal stand in front of her. Cherokee, a female singer whom host Robert Townsend mentioned was influenced by The Artist, did quite a few trademark James Brown/Prince moves like spinning in place and jumping into leg splits. The closing credits for the broadcast started during the song, and it only lasted about 3 minutes. At the Los Angeles LaVaLee shows in March 99, Sheila had mentioned to a friend in our group that the band had just taped Motown Live. The band performed "When Doves Cry" and "Girls & Boys" at the taping. But there was some kind of trouble in getting broadcast approval from The Artist and/or Warner Bros for the Prince songs. Therefore, those songs would not be aired. Instead, to fill the hour, there were 4 songs from Eric Benet, and 2 each from Cherokee and Foxy Brown. Benet's band included most of Sheila's (Eddie M on sax, Renato Neto on keyboards, Tony B on bass, and John Paris on drums). Kat Dyson played guitar during "Sex Machine". | |
