Courtney Love following in Prince's footsteps? Is Courtney Love following in Prince's footsteps?
Front page article in todays Los Angeles Times regarding Loves suit against record labels' contract policy. Love is seeking to break her contract with Vivendi Universal and expose what she calls the "unconscionable and unlawful" business tactics of the major record labels. According to the article she is "trying to throw back the curtain on the industry's corrupt accounting practices, designed to hide profits and cheat artists out of royalty payments." Isn't this what Prince has been saying for years? Much respect to Courtney but why is it that she is being hailed as the musical artists' saviour, while Prince is seen as selfish and egotistical when he speaks up about such matters? Courtney Love has seen the light and she has Prince to thank for it. Let's hope other artists wake up to this reality also. Snipped from the LA Times: "I could end up being the music industry's worst nightmare: a smart gal with a fat bank account who is unafraid to go down in flames fighting for a principle. Look, you show a music industry contract to any attorney in any other business and their jaw just hits the floor. This reminds us of the larger issues behind the actions of people like Prince. No other industry takes a "risk" on an artist by asking him/her to carry most of it through advances for production costs against sales revenues. | |
