Those who say Prince should be on the list because he is so versatile are correct. But that isn't the REAL reason he should be on the list (and in the top 5). The real reason is because he is the best RYTHM guitarist EVER. Without question. Oh yeah, and for those who have heard it, his guitar work on "Just my Imagination" from the "Small Club" show should have him at #1.

I disagree and I HAVE "small club". Roger Troutman (R.I.P.) SMOKED Prince on rhythm guitar. Anyone who has been to a Zapp show knows this. Cats like Otis Redding III will NEVER get their just due in the guitar world. Jams like "Erotic Groove" are proof that Prince is way down on the guitar funk chain. Admittedly, he is funky, but NOT, NOT, NOT the funkIEST. Not EVEN. I DO think that the list was jacked up and that if you had to keep the list of players that are there on there, then Prince SHOULD be on it. I think people are giving R.S. way too much credit in its credibility of selection. Vai wasn't even on the list. WTF? Come ON!!! Usually, when looking at greatest musician lists, here's a tip. If you know every name on the list and can recite a couple of songs from each artist: THE LIST IS BULLSHIT. As it is well known throughout the muscIAN'S community, some of the greatest players are also some of the lesser-known ones. Like I said on the OTHER post, I can name 100 players better than Prince. Rolling Stone, on the other hand, WON'T. They teeter between the fine line of industry trade mag and industry gossip mag. The lists in guitar player/ guitar world tend to be much more truthful (though also biased) because at least its GUITARISTS making the lists. People who PLAY tend to look for and notice more guitarists than people who don't play. Jimi may well be the most influential guitarist in history. He might me. Not the greatest, but maybe the most INFLUENTIAL. Jimi has made more kids wanna play guitar than Prince EVER will. Sorry, but its TRUE. Fact is, on Prince.org, Prince is the best at everything, but in the real world - NADA. If it were up to some of the FANS on here, he would be on the 100 best vocalist, best bass player, best keyboardist and best songwriter lists. Guess what, orgers...there are other artists out there, too. Maybe if some of ya'll would poke your heads out of Princeland from time to time, you might see that.

Prince clearly should have been on this list somewhere. I mean out of 100 people Prince doesn't deserve a spot somewhere? I place some of the blame with Prince though because he never really released an album from start to finish of strong guitar jams. The closest that he's come to that was Purple Rain which seems like eon's ago and the throw-away Chaos & Disorder. So he seems to for some reason does not want to really showcase this skill on his commercial releases. I also wonder since Prince has kinda turned his back on the industry is he now being treated like his contributions to music never mattered. Although that theory may be pushing it but for the life of me I can't see how he could be overlooked on this list. That's like having a list of 100 greatest dancers a not having M.J. on there. I don't get it.

I heard Rolling Stone had a height restriction...only males over 5 feet tall were eligible. What an unfair rule. Who can I write to in order to correct this injustice? Peace out!

What a shitty list!!

Kurt Cobain OUTRANKS Frank Zappa! Jimi Hendrix is Number 1. HAHA!

This list might have been a little bit more accurate if it was changed to

TOP 100 PEOPLE WHO ARE BEST KNOWN FOR PLAYING THE GUITAR

or top 100 guitar owners lol

It's just that most of the names on this list are people who INFLUENCED other guitar players.

I don't think Prince inspired a lot of guitar players since he's more a sum of influences (playing like Jimi here, like Santana there, like B.B. and so on...) than a guy who came with something new style-wise.

People rather copy an original than another copy.

& even my grand'Ma can kick his ass with a guitar biggrin !!

So... you mean to tell me, that Jack White of the White Stripes is a big influence.

I'm not discrediting his skills, but to my knowledge, he hasn't been out very long, so how is he an influence, and he ranks in the Top 20...?

Having just watched the DVD Live in Las Vegas, all you have to do is watch a few trax to show how goood he is on guitar, & should definately be on this list:

Push & Pull
1+1+1=3
Whole Lotta Love
Family Name
The Ride.

I think he's the best guitarist around at the moment because he makes it look easy, from whatever style he plays, the blues of The Ride, the rock of Whole Lotta Love, the funk of 1+1+1=3. How many guitarists can do that, so effortlessly??

Agreed..., although his Guitar work on 'Rave' is far better than in 'Live'. I just can't get over his rendition of Jimi's 'Red House'(purple house).

as for 'The Ryde'; his latest install on the new DVD is far too effortless the emphasis on this delivery is more on drum and bass than on lead guitar. There's some great live 'legs floating around that really show his ability.
...the Crystal Ball version is also very good.

On another note; there's another notable absentee from this so called 'greatest list' list that goes by the name of Craig Ross.. Those of you who have been to a LennyKravitz concert will no doubtly agree this guy has some serious talent.

I never understood why Prince fans take it so personally when Prince isn't hailed by the rest of the world with awards and high ratings on silly polls...

How many ppl do you know in the world? How many of them make fun of you because you like Prince? That should say something... I mean, we're fortunate enough to have a certain "spark" in us that makes us like him and his talents while others just see him as an irritating SILLY pop star from the 80s. Which he is actually.

Prince put WAY too much emphasis on his image than his musicianship which made most folks look at him like a goof. I mean, his haircut always seemed to be more important than his musical output for some reason.

Prince is more an icon than a musician to the rest of the world. Enjoy what WE have and be glad that he's NOT on any "best of" list. I mean, with his ego, I'm sure he'd be doing things COMPLETELY differently if he were "accepted".

If you haven't noticed, Prince's last 10 years has THRIVED off of that unacceptance.

T

I couldn't disagree more with the 3rd paragraph here...
The truth is that Prince took control...his music, his band,
his image...and when he didn't have control he did what he did in order to gain control.

The one's who ridicule do not know his music at all...these ppl cannot name an album and only know of one or two songs.

- Ahh..Rave sucks...very uninspired guitar...Purple House is one of the few nice guitar moments. I cant imagine Alladin DVD being worse
As for Craig Ross...i only saw Lenny´s concert in England, and I thought his solos were very boring...pentatonics over and over, without some ´charm´...maybe I am wrong, but it was my first impression on him,,,

This is my first pst for todat, 8/31/03.

You know, after VH1's obsessions with lists, I pretty much gave up on those things. They're never accurate and they can never please everyone. Sure, I wish Prince was on that list. He's a great guitarist. But I also wish for many more to join that list. Where the hell is Andy Gill? Huh? What about Johnny Marr? or Roger McGuinn? or Joe Strummer? What about Charlie F***ing Christian? Huh? mad He invented the goddamn lead guitar, didja know that? Where's Django??? DJANGO!!!

- where is Andy Summers (Police)
- Kurt Cobain and no Joey Santiago (Pixies) ?

Ok, ok, ok...now...you say Prince is not an “innovator” with the guitar? You say Prince is not "original" with the guitar? You say Prince does not "inspire" with the guitar? I say compare his guitar playing, live or on record (I'm old school) to everyone, ok do just the TOP 20 of this list, and how much better is he than any them?

Yes, at times he plays like Jimi, at times he plays like Carlos and at times he plays like B.B. King...but who else on this list has combined these VERY different sounds and made it work? No one…..no one has even tried.

There are some very good guitar players (the best) on this list but there are some in the top 20 (where Prince belongs) that don’t deserve the credit they are getting. In my opinion, Kurt Cobain, Jerry Garcia, Johnny Ramone and Jack White do NOT belong in the top 20. And Duane Allman at #2? The remainder of the top 20, well, I’d switch around a bit, add a few and include Prince.

I saw no signs of Stanley Jordan there, either. But as I said, its ROLLING STONE. What the hell do THEY know? They are just trying to sell papers to the masses, not comprise a REAL list. They wanna stock the list with names people are familiar with as well as try to get new readers. Just as some of us laugh at that Jack character from the White Stripes name being on there, there are probably thousands of new readers going "cool".
