Prince Played One Hour Instrumental Set In L.A.

http://launch.yahoo.com/r...tID=214418

(8/20/03, 6 p.m. ET) -- Prince and the NPG played an hour long instrumental set Monday (August 18) at B.B. Kings Blues Club in Los Angeles, following a screening of the artist's DVD, Prince Live At The Aladin Las Vegas, released Tuesday (August 19) on NPG Music Club/Hip-O Records.

Taking the stage at 10:30 p.m., dressed in a purple double-breasted suit and white shirt, the rock-fueled R&B act didn't say a word to the crowd as he and his band ripped through a funk heavy jam session including few of his staple hits. However, when the band played a New Orleans inspired version of "When The Saints Go Marching In," the animated audience sang the lyrics.

The preview of 80-minute DVD began at 8 p.m. at the Loews Cineplex Odeon Universal Citywalk. Joined by Sheila E., Maceo Parker, and Nikka Costa, Prince and the NPG didn't perform his massive pop hits of the '80s, "Little Red Corvette," "When Doves Cry," or "Let's Go Crazy." Instead the set list included the likes of newer lesser-known tracks, plus mid-'80s picks, "Pop Life," "Take Me With U," "Sometimes It Snows In April," and "Strange Relationships," from his albums, Around The World In A Day, Purple Reign, Parade, and Sign O' The Times.

Prince also included surprise covers of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love," as well as the JB's "Pass The Peas" and Nikka Costa's "Push & Pull." Parker and Costa joined Prince and the NPG for their respective tracks.

Some 150 NPG Music Club contest winners attended both the screening and exclusive performance. Longtime Prince supporters, Morris Day, Costa, and No Doubt member Tony Kanal, attended the festivities, but did not join Prince on stage.

Just curious.
The Rolling Stone article about the show said people got frustrated toward the end of the performance and started shouting "Sing" to Prince. But this article and other fan reports don't mention that. Did the whole crowd start yelling, or just a few people?
Either way, I wish I could have been there.

Well... forone thing: i like Prince when he does stuff like this. I realy do! It makes him so unpredictable. It's good! it's edgy. It's just Prince. wink
Remember when he climbed to the stage to perform with James Brown and Michael Jackson, and in fact tried to steal the show and it didn't work out?! ..well he wanted to sing to the mike, and all he could get out was some screams and some moaning! I just think it's great. :d
As well as when he didn't wanted to say a word during the American Bandstand Interview... superb.
And Prince showing up at some awardshow, just taking the goddamn thing and not saying a word, or sjust simply thanking god or something... i can't remeber for sure where or wat, but it was something like that. He's cool when it comes to this so called 'showoff arrogance'. it's showbizz peole, just see it as an act..
Prince can be cool, as long as he shuts the fuck up about jehova religion. but hey, he's free to do what he wants, and just don't have to take it. but i love him for his stupidness and his brilliance. just a normal guy to me. wink

Me too. And N.E.W.S. is the most exciting thing I've heard from him in years. Even better than The Rainbow Children i.m.h.o.

marko

so my DVD has landed in the UK today - Friday 22nd.

Ever felt ripped off, as a club member ?

My eversospecial club membership got the the chance to buy the same disc that's available on www.play.com for £10.99 inc postage.to the uk

Cover foto isn't great - looks cheap and grainy - i spoze that's deliberate, kinda low key, but ugh.

the dvd sound is OK, although there are some nasty overdubs.

movie Picture is good although it looks like they shot some of it from right down in the crowd, judging by the guys head that keeps bobbing up and down in the picture on the long shots. A true authentic experience !!!, probably deliberate also.

Its a good job it doesn't look like Prince wants commercial success, as this wouldn;t bring it in my opiniion

Still - the music is great, and that;s what counts for me.

Prince Surprises L.A.

DVD release party features hour-long instrumental set

Prince celebrated the release of his new DVD, Prince Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas, with a secret show at B.B. King's in Universal City, California, last night.

Joined in the 600-capacity club by a trim ensemble featuring bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer John Blackwell, keyboardist Renato Neto and saxaphonist Eric Leeds, Prince played his latest album, N.E.W.S., in its entirety, as well as with the song "Shhh."

Composed of four fourteen-minute jazz instrumentals -- "North," "East," "West," and "South," -- Prince's latest work reveals him to be warming to the role of bandleader in the traditional sense.

Last night, clad in a purple suit with a black shirt and tie, he approached his hour-long performance like splatter painting -- a little piano here, a little guitar there -- and occasionally stepped to the side of the stage mid-song to sip some bottled water and listen to his band play. Once he left the stage mid-jam and went upstairs into the V.I.P. area, took a seat near the balcony, talked with friends, sometimes casually peering down to see what the band was up to.

At no time did Prince sing or speak to the crowd, confining his communication to hand signals -- a finger to the lips during the saxophone solo in "Shh!", a nod of his guitar to the B.B. King logo above the stage during a guitar solo.

Toward the end of the show, an increasingly frustrated audience began to chant "Sing!"

But Prince didn't. When it was over, he flashed a peace sign to the crowd and disappeared.

Prince Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas Track List:

Intro/Soundcheck
Pop Life
Money Don't Matter 2 Night/The Work
Push and Pull
1+1+1=3
Strollin'/U Want Me
Gotta Broken Heart Again
Strange Relationship
Pass the Peas
Whole Lotta Love
Family Name
Take Me With U
The Everlasting Now
Sometimes It Snows in April/The Ride

Not one person screamed out for him to sing and definitely not the whole crowd.

The show was amazing. One thing that struck me about it was that even though it was a full show of instrumental music, they tore shit up hard. And I wondered why they didn't lay down the studio album like that.

And it was so surreal. I remember standing in the audience thinking to myself..."I just came out to be with my Bumpsquad and other LA freax and I am watching Prince and his band throwing down. When the opener to SHHHH began the look on my face must have been obvious because this girl grabbed me by my arm and as I turned to her with a wild eyed look she mouthed the words "I know". I can't believe how lucky we were out of all the markets Prince picked LA.

Personally, I'm glad to see that Prince is being unpredictable again. That's just classic Prince being Prince... it's refreshing.

Here recently (as of TRC) even when Prince did sing, there were many people who didn't want to hear what he was singing. So now, his instrument is his voice. I think it's brilliant.

I'm also glad to hear that some people who were dismissive of N.E.W.S and other instrumentals in it's studio format can feel the vibe of Prince's instrumental work a lot better when it's peformed live. That's encouraging for the true fans because something tells me that if Prince does tour this Fall, this is how it's going to be.

I can't begin to tell you how funky and rockin that set was. It was tight and out of control. I love this band. They put the 94 NPG to shame...

There was no disrespect felt by anyone that he didn't sing. I actually assumed maybe he had a cold or something. He got on stage and did what he did best, throw down the muthafuckin jams...
