Summertime blues and red-hot singles



1984: "When Doves Cry," Prince: Man, what a day the first Tuesday in June
was this year, as Prince's Purple Rain and Bruce Springsteen's Born in
the U.S.A. albums were released. But Rain's flagship single, about the
wounds created by a turbulent relationship, stayed at No. 1 for five weeks
and sounded far more summery than any of the Springsteen singles (note to
wise guys: "Glory Days" was released the next summer).
