NTSC only applies to the TV. Basically most older TVs bought outside the US didn't play NTSC (well they did but in black & white). New TVs have a setting whereby you can change from PAL to NTSC or have it on Auto.

So if you bought your TV outside the US in the last 2/3 years you should be alright with playing NTSC.

NTSC doesn't come into play on PCs.

New Works from Prince

The ever-elusive Prince will on Aug. 19 unveil the first official DVD from his NPG Music Club, "Prince Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas."
The set will be available to members of the artist's NPG Music Club Web site (http://www.npgmusicclub.com) as well as to traditional retail outlets via Hip-O Records.

The 80-minute DVD, recorded Dec. 15, 2002, during Prince's most recent U.S. tour, was previewed on the Web site in June, coinciding with the release of Prince's latest studio effort, the experimental "N.E.W.S."

The DVD features Prince and his New Power Generation band with guest appearances by Nikka Costa (news), Maceo Parker and Sheila E. During the show, Prince visited his classic '80s era with tunes like "Take Me With U," "Pop Life," "Gotta Broken (Heart) Again," "Housequake" and "Strange Relationship." He also includes a portion of a yet-to-be released song titled "U Want Me."

Other cuts on the concert DVD include "Family Name" and "The Everlasting Now" from 2001's "The Rainbow Children," Costa's "Push and Pull" and covers of the JB's "Pass the Peas" and Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love."

I'm really disappointed with this offering. Clearly, more could have been done - but how many times have we all had to say that as Prince fans?

I paid my $$ for N.E.W.S. and actually received it on-time. But you know what? It hasn't even made it's way into my CD player once! I listened to the downloads from NPGMC as they posted them, and I haven't been inspired to spend any additional time listening to this project. I'm not mad or anything that he tried this - just not interested.

As for the ONA DVD, I'm feeling today like I probably won't order it. I was looking forward to sitting down with friends to let them experience a Prince concert without investing the $80 to go with me sometime, but I don't think this DVD will be all that interesting. I also don't think it will have any commercial success. If that was the target, he would have released a full concert DVD from the 2000-2001 Hit 'n Run Tour that included the songs everyone really associates with him (I don't think most casual customers at Blockbuster Video would get excited to hear "Pop Life"). And, if he really wanted to make a splash with the general public, he would offer a full kick-butt show to VH-1 or somebody then follow up with a DVD release.

No, I think Prince thought he was "listening to the fams" by releaseing a concert CD and DVD. I absolutely loved the ONA Box Set (the edits didn't even bother me really). But this DVD just isn't that interesting to me. Once again, I'm just amazed at his ability to totally miss the mark from a business perspective. I would love to be able to sit down with him and try and understand his motives, because his logic (or lack thereof) is beyond me.

This also makes me wonder if I will be able to watch the DVDs I have on my TV when I get a DVD player or not!

It is the first Prince CD that I've ever not bought and it sounds like the Vegas DVD will be your first Prince CD/DVD not bought. Prince probably wasn't totally 100% satisfied with most of the Vegas show, so he decided to not include it. Never mind that we all would have enjoyed it and it all doesn't have to be perfect. If he ever releases complete concerts, I'll the first in line to buy. He needs to take a hint from Pearl Jam who release ALL of their concerts on CD through their fan club.

I don't understand why Prince understands his fans so little either. Maybe he is insecure and doesn't want to release anything that he isn't 100% proud of. But we love to see him and don't mind if something isn't perfect. Oh well, he's an eccentric artist and we have to take the bad with the good.

In these modern times releasing an 80 minute DVD of a 3 hour plus concert is just a plain cop out and rip off.

He givs us very little. The bare minimum.
