Third Dallas concert report For the last 16 years I have been a devoted fan of Prince, The Artist, TAFKAP...whatever...and he has always delivered on his promises to delight, entertain, and amaze his throngs of fans all around the world with his electrifying performances and dazzling energy. Once again, the powerhouse from Minneapolis has swept through my hometown of Dallas and completely blown my mind.
Since my very first live experience back in 88 on the final show of the US leg of the LoveSexy tour, I knew that I could always count on Prince to set the standard by which all other performers should judge themselves as far as their live performances go. I don’t know where he gets his incredible drive to constantly one-up himself, but somehow, he always does. That was the case when he finally returned to Dallas after a long hiatus 9 years later on the “Jam of the Year ” tour in 1997.He came to Dallas twice that year, leaving us begging for more and praying that he wouldn’t make us wait as long as he did the last time. Thankfully this was not the case as I just got in from witnessing what was easily the most awesome live performance I’ve ever had the opportunity to attend. This was the Prince that I grew up with. This was the Prince that came out on stage, kicked your ass for an hour, darted backstage, changed his clothes, and darted back out and kicked your ass some more. The main difference between this guy and the guy 15 years ago, is that he no longer has anything to prove to anybody. He’s seemingly out there on the stage to have as much fun as we are....and it SHOWS. He played with the crowd and left everybody either screaming, laughing or crying. I’ll always cherish the moment of my wife breaking into tears when he started into “Diamonds and Pearls” as that was our wedding song. The I almost lost it when a few minutes later, he leapt into “Scandalous” as THAT was the song that was playing when our child was conceived. For those of you who are awaiting your first experience as this tour makes its way to your town, I envy you. The man is every bit as astounding as he ever was if not more so with a version of the NPG that just bristles with talent. The addition of Najee to the NPG must be witnessed in person. This man will leave you breathless. I thought I was going to lose it when he went into his rendition of “Father‘s Song” from “Computer Blue” on the saxophone. WOW ! And Geneva.....ohhhhh LORD don’t get me started on Geneva. This woman is “SLAP YO MOMMA” FINE !!!!! Where was SHE this year at the Sydney Olympics ???? This beautiful lady can do things with her body that are probably illegal in certain states. Along with Blackman, Blackshire, Mr. Hayes and the ALWAYS beautiful and talented Rhonda Smith, Prince will leave you BEGGING to play ALL NIGHT !!!!! Thank you so much Prince for continuing to share with us your gift, talent, and love. We hope that you will always keep the people of Dallas in your thoughts and hope that you love playing here as much as we love having you here. P.S. Props to the girl on the floor that brought the box of “Captain Crunch” and held it up when the sound bite from “Joint 2 Joint” came on before the show kicked off. I wonder if she thought to bring soy milk too. | |
