First report on Charlotte (?) concert [Editor's note: I assume this is a report of the Charlotte gig, but there's nothing in the report that says which city. OH MY GOD! This day has been indescribable. First of all, thanks to all the beautiful Purple People I met today. Thanks David for your hospitality (saw you onstage during Come On) & Ray (I still say Sheila is better than Mike:) and so many others that I'm too tired to mention. THANK YOU for making this a day I'll never forget. Now, that that's out the way the show. In my 19 years on this Earth and my 4 previous Prince shows (2 Lovesexy & 2 Jam Of the Year shows), this show was one of a kind. I refrained from reading any previous reviews so I didn't know the setlist prior to the show. THE BAND....possibly the best since Lovesexy...yeah I said it:) John Blackwell was great, detailed and you could hear him but he did not try to punch a hole in the snare like someone else:) Rhonda was incredible. Her skills are otherworldy and versatility is mind-boggling. Kip & Mr. Hayes provided an energy I still haven't shaken off. Geneva was, as expected, on and created energy with the crowd. Najee was well....so great. I've always been familiar with his extraordinary talents but tonight he detached my jaw from my face. And Prince.... well. First of all, as I said before, I haven't read any reviews of this tour but this show was like no other I've been to, Prince or otherwise.. He did songs I didn't expect like Housequake, Mutiny (good lawd) and The Ballad of Dorothy. His energy was inspiring to say the least. Some may criticize his choice towards older material but so what. A killer band makes all the difference and a killer band he has. He has more energy than I have at 19. I'll leave the setlist to someone else because I'm too stoked. Gosh, I can't say how great that band was. I don't care how many times I hear Purple Rain as long as I hear it like that. The set was perfect. Very simple and I don't think I've ever seen better lighting or sound . The concert suddenly turned into a party when Come On started. I think it lasted forever with Doug E. Fresh & many, and I do mean MANY, members of the audience on stage. My seats were so good and I was so close at times to grab Prince's hat, though that is a little too fanatical for me. Prince left the stage many times during Come On, giving you some kind of idea how long it lasted, killing the bass & Telecaster while Dougie leaded the band through a go-go section. Nobody moved while Prince & Doug E. lead the packed stage through Kiss (which a again lasted forever) and Gett Off that was it. Though the show lasted for a little over 2 hours, I was & still am longing for more. P.S. STOP READING THIS & BUY RHONDA SMITH'S ALBUM..NOT NOW BUT RIGHT NOW:) Oh yeah, Prince cursed more than a few times:) | |
