Third report on Nashville concert Hit & Run Tour, Nashville TN, 11/25/00
Just got back from my 6th Prince concert and compared to those of the past it was a bit disappointing. I'm glad I got to go, but I won't be catching this tour 3 times like I did in '97. The set list: I'm glad I knew in advance to expect a gr. hits show otherwise the lack of new material might have put me into shock. Isn't this the same guy who just a few years ago abandonded old hits and toured with a setlist from an album that wasn't even released yet? The set was similar to what has been posted for other shows, missing was When Will We Be Paid (I really looked forward to this as I haven't heard his version before). Also many were a small snippet within a medley, let's call it what it is 30 seconds and a couple lines do not count as a full song. The highlights for me were Pop Life, Come On & I Could Never Take The Place..., (although ICNTTPOYM shoulda been longer, P had that guitar on fire!!). The band: WELCOME Johnny Blackwell! Can I get a amen! Everyone missing Michael & dissing Kirky need to check this guy out. Najee, okay he's good, but he was WAY over used. Liked the sax, hated the flute, and absolutely did not need to hear 4 or 5 solos so Prince could change clothes. And what is with the lack of a 2nd guitarist. I mean no one is better than Prince but half the show there is no guitar! What the hell?!? Prince either hire a guitarist or keep yours on the whole show!!! The sound & lights: the soundmen did a fantastic job, I couldn't believe the sound they got out of the speakers they had, the only thing is they did such a good job you really noticed the lack of guitar when P set his down. The light show over the stage was actually very cool looking for a no F/X show like this but the spotlight next to the drum kit has gotta go. most of the night it was pointed at the audience and at head level behind Prince. So if you looked in P's direction you were blinded! Ouch! So, for those who want to hear the greatest hits, again, check this tour out, I'll be keepin my eye out for the next tour that supports a new album with new music. Hopefully by then P will add a guitarist or better yet decide to play his the whole show. | |
