UPTOWN breaks record!

Issue #45 of UPTOWN will be out the first week of December. This issue marks the end of UPTOWN's 9th year - we have now broken the Controversy fanzine's record as the longest surviving Prince publication!

The new issue celebrates the 10th year anniversary of the Graffiti Bridge film and album with an article called Everybody Wants 2 Find Graffiti Bridge that studies the evolution of the project and examines the album in detail. The film had been long in the planning but the realisation was interrupted by other projects, including work on the Black Album, Lovesexy, and Batman. The film script would undergo dramatic changes as planning proceeded. Prince's original idea was for Madonna to play the lead role. At another point, Kim Basinger was going to be the star attraction of the film.

The article Y'all Want Some More? traces the history of Madhouse, musically one of Prince's most interesting side projects, providing him with an outlet for some of his jazz-oriented funk and rock music. The project also served as a showcase for his talented saxophone player, Eric Leeds. This article studies 8 and 16, and reveals details of no less than three attempts at a third album. The article also touches on Prince's work with jazz legend Miles Davis, including an eyewitness account of Miles' visit in Prince's home studio in March 1987.

Who is Prince? - an original songwriter, a skilled musician's musician, or a cutting edge musical pioneer? Is he all of this, or has his ambition to attain broad popularity and appeal across the widest possible spectrum in effect cancelled his efforts out? The article I Ain't Like The Rest deals with Prince's achievements as a songwriter, musician, and musical pioneer, discussing whether he has been able to meet his potential in these areas.

Continuing our series of "the story behind" various Prince songs, this issue includes an article titled Finest Purple, Pure Gold (from a line in the song) about Prince's involvement in Kate Bush's "Why Should I Love You?", released on her album The Red Shoes in 1993. Kate's engineer Del Palmer and Prince's engineer at the time, Michael Koppelman, discuss Prince's contributions to "Why Should I Love You?"

Excerpts from the articles will be posted on our website next week.
