Second report on Atlanta gig and aftershow i got my tickets to the show by western unioning my buddy in atlanta cash to get tix, (thanks allen).
i got to the tabernacle at 2:30 pm and there were about 5-6 folks there, matt, robert, cass, eric, and britany it was the usual inline, (as opposed to online) experience. much love to the above. we were actually let in ON TIME! ...and the show started promptly ON TIME, no kidding. the tabernacle used to be an old three story church in downtown atlanta. it seats 2000+, the floor section is open, with two balconies with hardwood seats. it's a great venue, except except in the summer, no air conditioning. prince was in good spirits and gave a killer performance.the highlights for me were his vocal performance. i think some of the criticism of najee in other posts may be due to the fact that prince did not play a lot of guitar during the show. most solo work was given to najee. but, if you saw parade tours, he didn't play that much guitar during those shows. the emphasis from prince was on the vocal performance. it definitely was the strongest i've seen. do me, baby, scandalous, the beautiful ones, nothing compares to you were breath taking, completely stunning. i've seen a number of folks that i would consider great singers, sarah vaughn, ella fitzgerald, k.d. lang, joe williams who can curl your toes with voice alone, and prince is way up the list. during come on, matt (see above) on the first row balcony leans over with a $20 and asks prince for the white come on hat so he starts playfully auctioning the hat. Matt throws $50 down to prince and he threw him the hat then threw the money into the crowd. like say he was in came to play with us. the set list was similar to recent shows, pop life continues to be in the set, as well as come on. i've seen a number of reviews of previous shows and will give my prospective. A) no new material- i am one of those folks who have seen him multiple, multiple times and would prefer to hear mostly new stuff. however, his back catalog is so amazing how can you not do these briliant songs. it would be like complaining to leonard bernstein (before he died- i don't know any other famous living conductors) about playing all those old dusty mozart and beathoven compositions, play some new stuff. most would see this as blasphemy. B) too much najee- i went in to the concert kind of expecting not to like him but for the vast majority of the time i thought he was a plus. i don't like that circular breathing extended note stuff, but the man got chops. as with other report new drummer john blacwell- devastating no other words necessary. i really liked the concert but the aftershow was THE BEST. it started with prince bring people on stage to give their interpretations of what thanksgiving means. set list- probably incomplete, but ... the ride - as screaming as the undertaker video and then some voodoo chile into when you were mine james brown themes jammed out into chuck d. on stage rapping fight the power over the j. b. jams superstitious with guest vocals (unknown) santana medley vicious guitar playing snapped strings and all she's always in my hair kiss really heavy guitar rocked out version i've had no sleep and have to go. this tour is a must see | |
