Prince references on UK television (and clarification on Sheena Easton's comment)

There have been a couple of Prince references over the weekend on UK television.

Firstly, as mentioned (though incorrectly) in an earlier thread, Sheena Easton appeared on the "So Graham Norton" show on Friday evening. He brought up Prince, saying that Sheena had originally sent a fan letter to Prince. She denied this and said they met because they were both recording in LA in 86/87 and she appeared on the "Johnny Carson" show. Prince watched that, made contact and said that he wished to write a song for her. That song was ... "Sugar Walls".

The host, Graham Norton, is a openly GAY man who commented that Sugar Walls was about Sheena's vagina. She said during press interviews at the time of its release, a particularly feminist reporter said it was disgraceful to sing about a vagina. Sheena replied that it was about whatever you wanted it to be about: the heart, the vagina, etc. Graham said: "Yeah, but it IS about your vagina, isn't it?" to which she laughed.

She denied that Prince had ever been within the Sugar Walls. She also commented , when asked about Prince's size, that he had a big head (not 'dick' as mentioned in earlier post). It appeared to me that she meant the one on his neck, not in his trousers! smile

Secondly, there was a show on Saturday called "Top Ten: Love Songs". Number 8 was "Nothing Compares 2 U" as performed by Sinead O'Connor. There was talk of the song being the definitive work of Sinead, and alot of talk about Prince penning the song for The Family. The lead singer of The Family was on saying how Prince had called him in one day to his office and said that he wanted to form a band.

[Editor's note: That would be St. Paul Peterson, who's posted to the PPML and alt.music.prince in the past. - MWC]

Then he gave them "Nothing Compares 2 U". Their version stank IMO. The lead singer still performs it and it had a quick clip in the background of a more techno/electric version - dreadful!

It went on to mention that upon hearing Sinead's version, Prince had resurrected the song for live performances, with Rosie Gaines. Rosie was interviewed and talked of how she adored singing the song with him.

Rosie siad that they were doodling in the studio one day and Prince started to play & sing the opening verse. He asked if she knew the song. She replied yes. He said for her to take the FIRST verse. She sang it. He grimaced heavily and said that he'd take the first verse and she could take the second!

Rosie was sat at a beautiful 'Steinway' and played a very quick-tempo version of the chorus/2nd-verse. Not bad, but very hurried.

Had a couple of bits of footage of Prince, taken from the D&P video of him at the piano and Rosie with the head band in her hair - that one.

So, a couple of mentions in 2 days over here in the UK!!
