Prince, Live at the Apollo

As we were sitting waiting for Maceo to take the stage, his manager came out and announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, the great Maceo Parker." Then, Prince came pimpin' out with Maceo's saxophone in hand. The crowd went crazy in disbelief. Prince pretended to jam on his horn. Then, Maceo walked out and he handed it over. Then, Prince was escorted by his security guard to box seats to watch a few jams. Then, he disappeared from sight for the rest of the night. Just his style!!

I think it's the one in New York.

It was NYC - the New York Times review mentioned it. Prince did something similiar a couple of years ago at a Maceo show at the Beacon. By the way, Maceo's new album is excellent. You should check it out while you're waiting for NEWS...

It was at the Apollo 125th Street New York, which is of course the famous one... I posted on a couple of comments elsewhere, but guess I got my news item in too late and this one pre-dated it... so to re-cap, Roy Hargrove opened for Maceo (this was part of the New York Jazz Fest) a good set... Maceo's new show is incredible, very very funky and the addition of Morris Hayes (yes that Morris Hayes) on keys adds a whole lot to the show... seems to breathe new life into it,(Greg Boyer and the regular band were there) Maceo played three or four songs from the new album as well as Baby Knows and some old favourites of his... Prince came out in the itro when it should have been Maceo, carrying the saxophone and wearing shades both of which he handed over to Maceo after some joking around... he seemed to be enjoying the show, Maceo talked about what it was like being back at the Apollo after so many years, (he was there I think with both james Brown and Parliament...???) and then made a sort of comment about from James Brown to Prince referring I guess to incredible people he's been involved with... it was a fabulous show, if anything a little too short...oh and yes the new album is really really good... "Made by Maceo" dynamite!!! some great horn arrangements (I think by Greg Boyer) and some really amazing grooves...treat yourself... !!!
