First report on Cleveland concert - George Clinton makes an appearance just got in from the CSU show...so far i agree, too much Najee...a little would have gone a long way. take a look at a Sting concert, when he had Branford Marsalis playing sax he added very tasteful licks to some of the reworked Police songs, and didn't go too crazy on the Sting solo stuff. setlist similar to whats been posted, except he opened with Uptown then went to Controversy. during the Kiss/Gett Off portion there was a special guest onstage...none other than the great George Clinton, dressed in a king's robe and dancing with the audience members collected on the stage and shouting out some lines from his best jams. sound was a little weak at the beginning, seemed to get better before the show got too far along. great to hear Darling Nikki live, its only been 16 years since i heard it live, and the schoolgirl treatment was great (you gotta see the show to find out what i mean...) all the great old dance moves, gyrating and the splits and the...well you know what i mean, Prince seemed a lot looser than he did last time i saw him, of course then he was just coming back from the ankle injury (no ramps on stage this year) so maybe that was an off night. i would say this show was better than Jam Of The Year but behind (not too far behind) Newpower Soul, but thats just my rating, yours may differ. good to see and hear some of the old guitars too, Prince didn't play enough bass but with Rhonda there maybe he felt it wasn't necessary. always good to see Prince come through town since it seems like Cleveland was forgotten after Purple Rain in 84, hopefully the tour will run long enough for him to make another stop here (please??) also nice to have no opening band, even though the show started maybe an hour and 15 minutes late it was cool. if you don't have your tix yet get em soon...the longer the tour goes the tighter the band will get... | |
