It was put together like a documentary. TERRI: She was an '80s pop music sensation, but today her talent shines in a different spotlight. In a recent backstage interview, Sheila E. explained more about the changes in her life with reporter Sandy Ingall. SANDY: Sheila E. rose to the top of the music chart in the 1980s with a song called "The Glamorous Life," and tonight, Sheila E. gives another top-performance. This time, it's a completely different kind of music. SHEILA: Hi, I'm Sheila E., and welcome to The Gospel Celebration. [beats on tom-toms] SANDY: This music is gospel music, featuring Sheila E., Kirk Whalum, Paul Jackson, George Duke, and more. [also, Take 6] TAKE 6: It's kind of hard to keep your mouth shut, when you have the answer. SANDY: And that answer is what motivated percussionist, Sheila E., to change her beat. SHEILA: Gospel music, musically, even if you're not a believer, it touches you anyway, in some kind of form. To see the performers that are here tonight... it's just incredible to be a part of this. Many of them I've worked with before. It's great to have my church involved, and my pastor is speaking tonight. So that was wonderful. And, just anything dealing with gospel for me at this time in my life is very very important. SANDY: How did you become a Christian? SHEILA: Actually, the first time I gave my heart to the Lord [giggles] it was in 1978 or so, 79, I was with George Duke, the piano player, and I was just going through a lot in my life. One of the singers in the band said, "You know what? If you just give your heart to the Lord and surrender to Him, you won't have to worry about a thing." So we just sat there and we prayed, and I gave my heart to the Lord. And I just felt enlightened. That was it, you know. I was so happy. [cuts to video of Sheila in '84 -- "But in 1983, Prince discovered Sheila E, and he introduced her to the so-called 'Glamorous Life.'"] SHEILA: In the 80s, being with Prince, and that whole camp, you know I was able to do whatever I wanted to. I figured, this is what I wanna do -- take my clothes off and just be free. And, in real life, that's not what I want to do, you know? SANDY: That wasn't the glamorous life? SHEILA: No, it wasn't. No it wasn't. SANDY: How did you get out of it? SHEILA: Well, you know what, as I was playing on that tour, the comment made to me by most people was, "I wonder what Sheila E. is going to wear today, or what she isn't going to wear." So, it wasn't about me playing anymore. And then I started feeling like, this feels uncomfortable now. I feel very naked in front of these people. And I just didn't like it. I was very uncomfortable. So that started the change. That was another process of growing, and getting closer to the Lord. [cuts to Sheila's gospel performance, singing, "I did not know how you would rescue me..."] | |
