When Doves Cry Named #7 Song of Past 25 Years by VH-1 The "100 Greatest Songs of the Past 25 Years," as chosen by VH1.
http://story.news.yahoo.c...songs_list http://story.news.yahoo.c...test_songs 1. Nirvana, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" 2. Michael Jackson (news), "Billie Jean" 3. Guns N' Roses, "Sweet Child O' Mine" 4. Eminem (news - web sites), "Lose Yourself" 5. U2, "One" 6. Run-D.M.C., "Walk This Way" 7. Prince, "When Doves Cry" 8. Whitney Houston (news), "I Will Always Love You" 9. The Police, "Every Breath You Take" 10. Madonna (news - web sites), "Like a Virgin" Here they are now, entertaining us — or at least entertaining VH1, which named Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" the greatest song of the past quarter-century. The Seattle band's groundbreaking grunge anthem is No. 1 on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Songs of the Past 25 Years." The whole countdown will air over five nights, starting at 10 p.m. EDT Monday on the video music channel. The series will feature clips of videos and performances by the artists along with interviews from musicians and celebrities discussing why the songs matter. Of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan (news) said: "That was really a breakthrough for a great scene that had been going on for a long time up in Seattle. And it was kind of another victory, I think, for a misunderstood music, you know. The dam broke when 'Teen Spirit' came out." While no one performer or group dominated the countdown, which was chosen by a panel of VH1 executives, several had two songs featured. Michael Jackson (news) had the second-highest song, "Billie Jean," and was at No. 40 with "Beat It." Eminem (news - web sites) reached No. 4 with "Lose Yourself," while his "My Name Is" was No. 85. Madonna (news - web sites)'s "Like a Virgin" was No. 10 and her "Ray of Light" was No. 100. Rounding out the top 10 were "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses, "One" by U2, "Walk This Way" by Run-D.M.C., "When Doves Cry" by Prince, "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston (news) and "Every Breath You Take" by The Police. In May 2001, VH1 picked the 100 greatest videos of all time; Jackson's "Thriller," a 17-minute mini-movie, was No. 1, but it didn't even make the list this time.

You know, I love that song too. I actually like, to differing degrees, all the songs in that top 10. It wouldnt be my top 10 but it's not too bad. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

TEEN SPIRIT may be the most overated song of the last 100 years.
Any song in the top 10 deserves to be there except Teen Spirit. Total Boolshite !

- Hmm...I never trusted polls, but Teen Spirit broke the wall. I am not a Nirvana fan, but in the end of 80s rock and roll was very repetitive, and they made the alternative music become mainstream. And Kurt Cobain was a talented songwriter, despite not being a brilliant player. I prefer ´Come as you are´...but ´teen Spirit´ was probably the most important song of the 90s.

Even though Lose Yourself is a great song, Eminem hasn't paid his dues long enough to be ranked higher than Prince. My Name Is should not be on this list. That's a joke.
Lose Yourself, may be deserving in 10, maybe 5 years or so, but give it time to prove it can age as well as Doves. Damn.

Hey I forgot the HYPE of the moment M&M.Remove him and put up Rappers Delight by Sugar Hill Gang.
Hell, let's give Mike his props and put him #1 w/Billie Jean.If it was not for that song this discussion is moot. Back to Teen Spirit.Yes the song is cool. Yes it defined the 90's.My main arguement is # 1 over 25 years of music ??? Come on !!! You see Nirvana ranked way higher than they should be in every recent "greatest" lists. Where is Pink Floyd & The Clash ? Prince's Sign O The Times ??? All of it is boolshite !
