Vanity Talks Prince in Vibe Magazine The July 2003 issue of Vibe magazine, with J-Lo on the cover, has a short one-page update (page 62 to be exact) on Vanity. Now a born-again Christian, she of course mentions her relationship with Prince, among other things. No new revelations, but two relevant quotes on his Purple Highness:
"Prince became my boyfriend and gave me a choice: either come with him to Minneapolis and become a star, or go away. It became a very passionate love/hate relationship." "As fas as people like Prince are concerned, I'm too busy praying for people to be angry at them."

Why would she be angry with him?
This is really bad timing, with all the Charlene Friend stuff I can't believe I have to buy a magazine with J-Ho on the cover ********************************************

I'm sick of Vanity and her self-righteous "I forgive him" attitude. Be a star or go away? Wow, that's really twisting your arm girl. Vanity only became "born again" when she ran out of other options and her career was down the drain. At least Hammer and Prince always gave props to God and didn't just wait until their careers went into a slide. Just one time I would like to see one of these so-called stars renounce all the drugs, sex and power at the height of their fame. Then I might listen to what they have to say. Only one I can think of was Mase and he was on his way out the door soon any way. Give it a fuckin rest Denise! Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

If her heart has truly been healed by God she wouldn't pray for the destruction of someone else. Seems kind of antithetical to me. ___________________________________________

It's Vanity 2003 taling about a so-called prince 1982...
He changed too!!! This statement of her seems rather unfair... "Goodness will guide us when love is inside of us... The Force will be with you, always"

I would like to see Vanity work with Prince in a remake of the Warren Beatty movie Shampoo. Prince would play the outrageous hairdresser who people think is gay, but he's really screwing every woman who comes into the hair salon.
The Beatty/Prince hairdresser character has a mistress and a girlfriend. Vanity could play the mistress. The mistress has a daughter, whom the hairdresser/Prince also gets busy with. Vanity's sexy daughter could be played by Beyonce. And instead of having the Richard Nixon backstory, the backstory in the new Shampoo would feature jokes about the George Bush era. Jamie Foxx would be on hand as another hairdresser in the salon. I think this movie would work great.

Thanks for the tip.. JLO looks amazing. Oh, and there's some other good lines in the article:
"At the american music awards in 1980, Prince sent his manager over to ask me if I wanted to take him to the bathroom or something silly like that. I didn't. He kept following me around and asked me if he could try on my coat. Finally, he asked me to go on a date with him and Morris Day." She also mentions later that in 1992 she had "lost both kidneys, my eyesight, my hearing, had internal bleeding, a heart attack, a stroke.. " I didn't realize she did THAT many drugs..

Sometimes it takes years and a lifetime of experiences before someone comes to God. Prince is Prince, Hammer is Hammer and Denise is Denise; different people with different lives. Many people don't get faith until they've been through hell. Its not always about "the career". She lost her liver and almost DIED. I'd say THAT probably had moe to do with her lifestyle change than anything else.

Man,you took the words right out of my mouth I love Vanity and it hurts me to say this but I agree with what you said.I'm just sick of seeing artists live the "wild life",then years later when the hits stop, they suddenly become "enlightened" and spend all their time denouncing their previous life. You see this all the time on those tired "Behind The Music" specials and it's become such a cliche. And one thing I've never understood is,why can't artists simply learn from the examples *BEFORE* them, instead of going down that same, destructive path (Hey Whitney, did you ever watch "Lady Sings The Blues"? Did you ever hear of a singer named Natalie Cole??).

Did you ever hear of a singer named Natalie Cole??). Why should "stars" behave any different than regular people? My experience with such folks is that it usually takes a major crisis before they change. No one goes to AA or CA or NA or whatever before they have a problem. Vanity found her God while on what she believed to be her deathbed. She was seriously ill, and failing. She believes that God got her out of that bed, and lives her live that way - why snipe on her for that? Most people/artists don't learn from experience because most believe it won't happen to them, or it isn't happening to them. Natalie Cole was homeless and destitute, and still had to be involuntarily committed before getting help. That's not a cliche, but the rule for most people who go that route. Hammer may have believed from the beginning, but it didn't prevent his career and $$$ from going down the tubes. The same can be said for most artists - it the nature of the beast that you're only successful for a limited period of time, and it's how you react. And most do not react well. It's human nature, not a cliche.

Because that's easier said than done for some people. Being addicted to drugs is a very hard thing to overcome, no matter how many times you may say to yourself, "Ok, that really was the last time I'm going to do that." Sometimes it takes something drastic to happen (like almost dying) for you to really change your life. And even that sometimes isn't enough. Until you've actually been there yourself, you shouldn't judge others inabilities to get clean. Sometimes when life gets rough, and you are down, down, down... You turn to the only source that you know.
I believe that this is what happened to Denise.. And good for her if this is what works to heal her soul. ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^

I'm glad that Denise has found God...but there seems to be a little bitterness on her part when it comes to Prince...perhaps there is some deep rooted feelings that she has for him still. Her statement "as far as people like Prince are concerned." She still sound angry or perhaps she hasn't resolved some old issues with him. They both were young back then and probably two very intensed people but was it his fault that she at times allowed herself to be manipulated.

I read the article while I was in B & N and I thought that she has come a long way. She is now preaching the Word that saved her life. Why is it when the "Mary Magdelene's" of the world get saved everybody has an issue with it? If Jesus saves than he saves to the nth degree. Completely!
I think when she said "people like Prince" I think she was referring to people in her past. I don't think she has any resentment. Resentment is not an empowering emotion. She has too much work to do to be sitting around giving time and energy to the past. And I love her new look! 1 Thessalonians 5:23
