Second report on the Paisley gig I'll write a little bit on the show this morning. I'm not going to write much because, aside from a few moments, I wasn't very excited by the show.
The guitar playing was superb! He was VERY on, as far as the guitar goes, all night. He opened up by having John Blackwell kick a Latin groove (complete with gym-whistles) and proceeded to amaze with a very cool, guitar-laiden Latin jam. This was one of the best things he did all night. Each musician got a moment to shine (and warm up) during this song. Then, he went into one of the those very famous Santana tunes. I wanna say "Oye Como Va", but something tells me I'm wrong. Again, more amazing guitar. He didn't say a word for 20 minutes or so...and he didn't have to. The music was saying it all.<-----Sorry, that was bad. Umm...during the Santana song, this girl got on stage and proceeded to take the mic (much to everyone's surprise, including Prince). Too bad the mics weren't turned on, yet! Bwwaaaaahaaaaahahahahaha! She looked like an idiot! And that's what she gets for tryna' blow up the spot with no skillz. Prince must've been feeling nice (or curious), so he had the soundman turn on the mics. And lo and behold, we heard a "DO-DO-DO" version of the famous Santana song that I can't name. Girlfriend was trying to scat! Whew! I had to look away. And when I looked back, luckily she DID scat! She was gone. The first song (with words) that he did was, "Come On". It was funky as usual. It's just hard not to be into it, especially if you're a musician, when the band is as talented as it is. WOW! They were so VERY extremely tight. Great musicianship happening on stage. And a definite improvement over the last band. Even Geneva was enjoyable to watch. Next was, (I think) "She's Always In My Hair". I've always liked this song a lot and it was nice to hear live. But here I am hoping I'm gonna hear something that I haven't heard him do live for a LONG time and right away he's doing tunes I've been hearing for the last few years. BOO! I think, "U Got The Look" was next. It was fine. Again, good playing. Good song. Geneva was sharing the mic with Prince on the chorus. Maybe to show she's not just a piece of ass. Sorry but that's how she comes off, inititally. Prince was doing a lot of little teasers. He would start the opening chords of "Days Of Wild" and then not go into it. He started, "Pop Life" and then didn't go into it. Instead, the beat that he's been using to fuel "Kiss" started. THE SAME VERSION OF KISS HE'S BEEN DOING FOREVER!!!!! I don't think I need to tell you that the audience got to sing the last verse because you probably already know that. During one portion of the show, DVS (pronounced devious) came out. I had to admit it but he's got a flow. He can rap. No lie. I don't want to admit it cuz it's just so hard to take a white boy dressed in hip-hop gear, with a custom-made leather jacket that says DVS on the back, SERIOUSLY. But sure enough, he's talented. I was impressed. He rapped some verses and Kip did the hooks. I liked it. I'm pretty sure it was a song on his upcoming album (YEAH RIGHT! It's an NPG release, silly! It's not coming out! Prince will file it right next to Cat's Paisley Park debut). Then Prince did "Gett Off". Funky, yeah. But I've heard it all before. At least he didn't do Housestyle to close it! Jonny came out and joined Kip Blackshire for their little "Dance With Me" routine. God, where have I heard that before? Oh, yeah...almost every show I've seen of his in the last 2 years. Hehe. No worries. I just gotta say AGAIN that Prince's guitar playing was amazing! His solos, his rhythm guitar, his scatting along with his solos...ALL AMAZING! Okay...now Prince had to get all political. He asks, simply "Are ya'll gonna vote". Everyone says, "Yeah". Then he says "Who you votin for?". No one really answers. He says, "Come on...if you're voting for him, you should be able to back him up and at least say his name." Someone says, "Gore!". He asks, "Is he against the death penalty?" Someone says "yeah" then someone says "no"...blahblahblah. Prince says he's against the death penalty. Fine. Then he comes to the conclusion that they (the men running for pres) are the same, mostly. And that it doesn't matter who you vote for. He refered to Blacks being labled as 3/5 human in the Constitution. "You need to change the heart of a man who would write that in the Constitution before anything will change". Someone asks him who HE's voting for and he says.....guess.....yup, he's voting for God. Didn't see that coming! "I'll be onstage doing this, Tuesday night!". So Prince says, "Don't vote." In so many words. And why should he? He's a multimillionaire! Nothing any one of our leaders does is REALLY going to affect him much. He's got a team of accountants who'll make sure he's okay. And if he knocks Geneva up and George Bush, Jr is in power and he DOES take away a woman's right to choose...she'll be on the first plane to Switzerland to have an abortion because Prince has got the money to do it. Which is why I couldn't really feel where he was trying to take us on the next song. It was a new one he's written called, "When Will We Be Paid For The Work We've Done?" I'm sure you already know what it's about. Lyrics like "We rape the land from shore to shore".."We fought in all of your wars" WE? I'm sure you know the rest. It was a slow bluesy song...and I was humming on the way out...but PLEASE! I don't wanna hear a millionaire look me in the eyes and sing, "When will we be paid for the work we've dong?". Muthafucka, you ARE PAID! You've BEEN paid! A millionaire has no MERIT singing those words to me! Sorry I'll get off my soap box. But I hope you see my point. Anyway, he STORMED off stage after it was over like he was crazy pissed. And that was it. Have fun on the tour, everyone! PS-Ladies, he was wearing a black jumpsuit exposing his chest, Lovesexy hair (When he first walked by, I thought Oprah had gone on her liquid diet again and was partying at the Park..but it was our man! hehe) and the hoop earring. | |
