I'm sorry to have to say this, I guess you really don't listen to the beatles! You are talking about an early Beatles song. "I wanna be your lover" doesn't have the depth and musical complexity that "Lovesexy" or "Rainbow children" have. The next ten years of beatles music is pretty incredible!! yes, even better than "she loves you". Anyway, I don't know if anyone caught this but me, but that is a pretty stupid thing to say! I LOVE Led Zepplin and The Beatles both. It's pretty close, however, The Beatles seemed to have had a more powerful movement in musical history! after all, Led Zepplin never wrote a POP tune like, "she loves you yeah, yeah, yeah." -get back into the music books. I just wanted say that I agree with alot of what I am reading on here. I will need to check out some of the Beatles music more than I have in the past. To judge someone by just one song is not a very good assessment on my part. Imagine if everyone judged Prince on Scarlet Pussy or Do You Lie? Not terrible songs but not his best either. Hands down in my opinion Prince is one of the most talented musicians ever, if not the most talented ever in pop music. It is very frustrating that he does not recieve the recognition that he deserves. However, I don't believe that the charts are completely ruled by teenagers only. I am 30 years old and I still buy at least one cd ever 2 weeks. And they would include every thing from Prince to Linkin Park. Sometimes the charts do get it right. Example here would be Santana. It is impossible to ever finally have an answer to a question like: who is better, the Beatles or Led Zepplin. The reason is that for most people it comes to taste. The Beatles did outsell Led Zepplin but by relying on that to be the determining factor as to who is better we put to much credit on the side ofthe teenagers of that time period. We all have our different opinions as to what we would like Prince to do in the future considering not only his musical direction but also the way in which he distributes said music. The important thing that I guess myself and everyone should appreciate is the fact that he is still out there for us. Creating new music and writing words that inspire the downtrodden. I still find myself listening to Gold and Dolphin sometimes when I am down. They still sound fresh and new today. I personally am so glad to have somewhere like this site where I can be in contact with others whose lives have been touched by Princes music because I live in an area where Prince fans are extremely hard to find. And I am really pumped about the new album. Even if it is an instrumental album, I don't need words because the music will speak to my soul just as well. Of course I would prefer the words, but as long as the music inspires an emotion deep inside the listener it has to be much better than all of the corporate, spit polished mass produced songs that we are all subjected to these days. Know what I am saying? Peace and be wild my friends...

Personally, I think the "Funkmasters" are by far some of the "BEST" REAL musicians and songwriters from the PAST. Aside from Prince and others. [This message was edited Thu May 29 19:10:56 PDT 2003 by naturegirl]

- well, ´Stairway to Heaven is a true classic. In the field of rock and roll, Led Zep did several classics (´Whole Lotta love´ covered by Prince, BTW) and influenced a generation too. (I am not comparing them to Beatles, I am just pointing that LZ was great)

- I dont think so...he just released ´Xpectations´. I liked the sample a lot. It´s hard, edgy. And introspective at the same time. I am very curious for the next album. I wish it could be a complete band collaboration album (with Rhonda, Blackwell and Renato), like Gold Experience was. Let´s wait and see.

toddefrost said: How many of you ever heard of Tony MacAlpine. Not many I bet. He is an extremely talented guitarist, who writes of all his songs and plays keyboard, bass, lead and rhythm guitar and some drums. He always played by his rules. He is better than anyone else on the Billboard today, however, because he never played by the systems rules he never got the promotion that his music deserved. Does this sound familiar anyone?!
- Yes, MacAlpine is real talented. With Prince, the biggest difference is that he once was extremely famous and now he has a very limited fanbase (because guys like Sting and Springsteen aged, but could keep a large fanbase, they are putting songs on movie soundtracks, winning Grammys, etc). Maybe he is happier now. Maybe he is not stressed so much about reaching the top, maybe he got the ´Rave lesson´. He seems to be very introspective these days, and his music is getting better and better. Sometimes I wish he was at the top again...see people commenting his lyrics, watch him on TV everytime...but other times, I just wish he remains ´underground´making great independent music. Let´s not forget that his most successful songs were made when he didnt care too much about charts (When doves cry, etc). I wish I could see him covered by more ´serious´ musicians than Carmen Electra (like Joshua Redman cover of ´How come you dont call me...´). It would be nice. Well, let´s wait and see... In other words...my biggest wish is that Prince does great MUSIC (melody, harmony and rythm)...strong songs that will last.

If Prince wanted to sell 5 or 6 million, he'd have to promote on the highly rated television shows and perhaps perform on MTV or HBO... And be signed to a label that will treat his art like art and not hold any personal BS against him so that they can promote him. Prince is very CAPABLE of selling millions of records again, if Santana can, Prince Can, so lets stop being negative and he has a club now to share his journey with and I support him to the fullest!!! Regardless he is still important! I feel y'all.. it would be so sweet to be able to say to everyone "see? told u so muthaf*kas!" LOL BUT.. do you mean in the US or worldwide?? Prince has only sold 5 million a couple times WITH the industry backing! The general public has only bought into his records a few times, in my opinion, because they don't know what they're gonna get. The r&b crowd doesn't want so much guitar, the rock crowd doesn't want so much funk, the funk crowd... and on and on. But its all in there, so you can't really expect any crowd to be totally satisfied, LOL. The reality is that just doesn't happen. The curse is that he HAS done it before, and seems to have done it so effortlessly that we expect him to do it each time out. I would lower that threshold to 3 million... that would easily be enough to have a couple singles do well, and get at least 1 good video in rotation. That would get people talking, especially all the more 'relevant' young artists that look up to him and could inspire him to challenge himself again. ********************************************

Just a thought, but is it possible that, since he is rumored to have an expecting wife, Prince has chosen not to repeat the mistake of Emancipation and to not release songs during this period? All he could produce during Mayte's pregnancy were songs about fatherhood, family/matrimony, etc. He paid the price for preparing the release of these songs and going ahead with the release of Emancipation despite the tragic turn of events. I think there's a good chance that this is the reason 2003 is a wordless year.

I say go for it Prince. Keep the new music coming, whether it's instrumental, songs or otherwise. In a couple of hundred years historians may discover that Prince's lyrics were written by Christopher Marlowe.

¡SomedayP I totally agree with you!
I really don't understand why everybody wants Prince to be successful in the mainstream business. Since late fall 2001 Prince has come out with TRC, ONA, ONA LIVE and XPECTATIONS. That is 4 albums in just 15 months. I don't recall him ever being that productive and creative. If he did play the corporate game he would have never been allowed to come out with a. this kind of music, b. with this amount. Personally I think the above mentioned music is some of the best he has ever done. Besides that, his world tour seemed to have been pretty successful so I am really wondering who's ego needs to have him being part of the mainstream. Is it the fan who might feel less worth because his hero isn't on top of the charts, or is it Prince himself. From what I could see at the last celebration and during the Berlin concert when 9.000 people were having a great time Prince seems to be pretty happy. So let us see the world as it is and not the way we want it to be. Peace

I'm sure sales of an instrumental album will be MUCH lower than a regular album, but he may not care about this. I say let him follow his artistic desires, even if they bore me sometimes. I'd rather him do that than pander to us and go through the motions, writing uninspired songs. If he is in the mood to write songs with lyrics again, cool. If not, then we still have 20 years of great songs by Prince to enjoy.

you all act like Prince is a Sports team and you're all rooting for him to win another world series... and since he hasnt really tried you're all just here yearning for the "glory" days of being a fan of one of the most successful artists of all time...
its like you hate the fact that people aside form yourself dont care anymore... you're not as individualistic as you once were huh? what is it really about.. is it about the music? or is it about being part of something big and watching your "team" win? it should be about the music... i dont know any of you... but most of your posts disgust me... the way i look at it is Prince had the success he did in his younger years to be free enough to create what he wants in his later years... and i love what he's doing now... let the dude live and create at his pace... in the words of Janes Addiction.. I'm tired of all this "he's such a delicate artist" nonsense. He made such a huge deal out of having freedom from the record companies to do what? Preach JW to us, tell us to stop cursing, to divorce himself from his past, or listening to his boring aimless instrumentals (AND I LOOOVE good instumentals and jazz). I was so ticked off with One Nite Alone box cd, I could spit (and I went to the actual concert). What was the point to all of that if he can't or won't give his fans, who PAY for him to be eccentric and "artistically" free and who are constanly defending him, what they want to hear (and no I'm not talking about repeating the 80's)! I've been fiending for years for Prince true masterpiece(whether it's a major Billboard hit or not. He is constantly running from his past instead of looking at the greatness he has created and building on it. Isn't he at all concerned that there are young people out there who don't know how important he is and only refer to him as the "little weird f%gg%t"? I Look when Prince comes into town I'm there, but he definitely needs to get off his high horse because as time goes on the only person who is going to think Prince is great is Prince!
