Amel Larrieux closes out SF, CA. set with "Mountains"

Just though I'd mention that I attended a great performance by Amel Larrieux. The show was held at Kelly's Mission Rock in San Francisco. Novel, and some wannabee Destiny's Child group called Chosen performed as well. This was the first time I'd seen Novel perform. His performance was decent. He held the crowd's attention though I can't say that it was great. Still not sure how I feel about his voice. Not to say its bad, just reminds me a little too much of D'Angelo considering he is MIA right now.

As for Chosen...I felt like I was watching an SNL episode with the group "Gemini's Twin". Their voices were decent. But the way they came out was funny to me. They started off with the whole "This song is for all my girls who <>. I didn't listen to much of this as I was too busy checkin some of the women at this show. Ladies always come out in full swing at this place.

Amel came on about 1:50am or so. Their keyboardist's wife was having her baby right then. They just happened to come across someone that knew her material. Did quite well. I can't recall the entire set list as I was kinda faded and again...still talkin to some ladies. Off the top of my head I remember "Come Home", "Tell Me", "Get Up", "You Will Rise", "Mountains" and a few others. Her pitch was just perfect. I swear she is one of few singers that will give back even more when the crowd is cheering her on. As she announced "Mountains", she said something about Prince and the song if I am not mistaken. Kind of hard to hear at times because the crowd was pretty loud. I really enjoyed this version. She attacked that song. The crowd recognized it right away and got even more excited as the song progressed.

Where do you get the listings of performances in the Bay area? Still kinda new here, and dont' know all of the posts.
Any info would be much appreciated.

Wow! Surprising that someone would cover a somewhat obscure song like "Mountains" & even more surprising that an audience would recognize it.
"Mountains" has always been one of my favorites & I wish Prince would bring it out in concert every now & then.

"Mountains" is a great song and it was released as a single and video on MTV/VH1 & BET and 'Parade'charted in the Top 5 Billboards pop albums with #1 single "Kiss"...so why wouldn't anyone recognize this song?

DUH!
Its off the chain!

parade got to like number 3, considering purple rain and ATWIAD got to number one its quite a failure, and mountains was a minor hit compared to kiss. didnt it not even get in the top 20? something like 22? anyway, i suppose if the audience were in their late 20s, 30s they might know it, but even if it were full of them id be surprised if the majority knew that song. and just cos its great dont mean nothing. if it was so great (to other peoples perceptions i mean) then it would have been a bigger hit and parade wouldnt have been princes lowest selling album since dirty mind or maybe even prince.

NPD313:Interesting how we think we know it all.
I'm not surprised...
debut at #3 is good enough for any artist I'd assume, whether it sold 10,000 copies vs 1 copy...it still sold a good amount to mount to #3 on Billboards...does anyone see that its the debut impact that counts more so than how long it stays at the top...
Like Prince says: Its only mountains and the sea, there's nothing greater than you and me!!!

DUH!

Man, I LOVE Amel -- in this VH1 world of pop-divas, she's about as under-rated as it gets. The fact that she performed "Mountains" is just more proof of that fact. Does anyone know a) if Mountains is a staple in her set list, and b) where I can find out the next time she's in DC?

Africa divided, hi-jacked in the air,

try this site...

they have a calendar listing all kinds of events in the area of soul/r&b, hip-hop, jazz, and latin music around the bay. they will send you updates too if you do the newsletter. that is one of the most detailed i've seen.

not that other regions don't have a major appreciation for prince. but p was out here fairly often for not only performances but for scouting of new musicians. especially when sheila was in the band. before she moved to l.a. from the bay area, she was still a person he consulted when thinking of changing up his lineup. so to me, it is not surprising that a lot of people recognized it.

Sorry I'm late with this. I didn't know there was thread.

The pics from the link below are of terrible quality because Amel decided to ‘turn down the lights’ after the Amel Larrieux0 pic and my ‘lil Kodak still camera couldn’t handle the low light conditions. The Mountains mp3 IS what you think and it’s what she closed the show with. This almost makes up for missing her at the first Celebration. Unfortunately, I didn’t go to the show planning to record, but same said trusty ‘lil camera did come through and got us a pretty poor quality, mono recording of a kick-butt rendition. Not ready for Kazzaa imo (I’m gonna have to learn how to edit audio someday), but share as you will.

Right click > Save target as for the .mp3's

* As a little bonus, I included Reflection for those who don't have their own copy. Enjoy!
