Bart, this isn't a contest on who is right or wrong, it's a matter of sharing information in a contructive way. Is it that U don't like the fact that Prince isn't as "popular" as in the past? What is the deal? Do U even like him or his music? I would like 2 know. If U did, U wouldn't be so passionate about disputing with laurarichardson the way U do. U wouldn't be so against what Chuck D. has 2 say about the subtitle. Do U even have any of Public Enemy's music? Is it not an artist's perogotive 4 them 2 ask questions about people's actions? I bet if U had Chuck D. and Bart in a debate... (ooohhh... that gives me goosebumps...) Chuck would "Shut 'Em Down"!

And Hahn does not just allude to a fall of Prince in terms of commercial success; on the contrary Hahn in fact argues that Prince falls off artistically as well because the WonderTwins (W&L) are no longer with him. 4. There are several bubblin racial undertones in the "fall" as well... the shift to a black band, the WonderTwins reportedly saying we're now "just an R&B James Brown band" after the horn section is added and P starts collabin with others. 5. realm said: I do not think its so much a racial issue. It is one hell of a stupid title for a book, the author is definetly selling drama.
To a Rolling Stones fan the music is fresh as it was years ago, they are still on top. Same goes for a Bowie or Elton fan. Same goes for the core Michael Jackson fans, if Elton would have changed his name to a symbol and his sales dwindled people would have bagged on his shit. When music lives with you in your heart these artists never fall..Prince is a legend, just like Bruce, the Police, etc.. - It´s true...with Prince it seems to be different. Artists like Springsteen dont sell to the same audience of Britney, but he is still mainstream somehow, appearing and winning Grammys, etc. The same for Sting and Elton John. Sting´s ´Desert Rose´ was quite a hit here in Brasil. Princey has a very limited fanbase compared to these ´middle aged´ artists.

When he started singing Sam Cooke's Twistin The Night Away to start his solo career etc. Another Sat Night etc..Cooke was a major influence on Rod Strewart. Prince said something like, "Once you step away from the machine (Standard Major Label Deals,) you won't have a hit."
It's a lot harder to reach people worldwide without going through Major Label owned Distribution and Radio. I think that Prince's move towards Independence has more to do with his supposed "fall," than his musical work. I doubt he regrets being in control of his work and business, especially at the level that he's at. Peace, Marzuki Grinage

BartVanHemelen said: laurarichardson said: Well if WB did not get anything from Prince in writing saying he would not diss the company that was their stupidity.
It's called a gentlemen's agreement. laurarichardson said: I do not blame Prince for keeping material away from WB if they were not going to spend any money promoting his RnB music. You could hardly find The Symbol cd, The Gold Experience, or Come.
Hilarious. went to no. 2 in the charts -- not bad for a CD you "ould hardly find". Come was shipped in such large number I bought it mere weeks after the release for less than midprice because record shops couldn't shift it at all and I saw copies in the "buy it for next to nothing" bins for years. TGE was easy to find at the time of release, but it's impossible to find now since WB can't repress it (part of a special deal). Again laurarichardson said: I have always believed that as soon as he started going back to funk and Rnb Warner Brothers wrote him off.
Bwahahahahahaha. Hilarious. You "think"? If you've proven anything, it's that you don't think. A perfect example is earlier in this thread, when you said this: laurarichardson said: Rod will be recording music when he is ninety because some racist ass in the industry will continue to give him the chance.
Have you looked up who that "racist ass" is? Have you? Ready to admit defeat and shut up? --- The only thing I am ready to admit is that you are one of the most annoying people on this board on this board. You think you know everything there is to know about Prince. Well let me tell you this is nothing to be proud of. Now I will let the written bitch slapping start. "It's called a gentlemen's agreement." There is not such thing as a gentlemen's agreement in the business world. If WB was so worried about Prince trashing the company in the press they would have made him sign an agreement to stop trashing the company. I find it hard to believe that the mighty WB was worried about one little black man's comments. Bart said Hilarious. went to no. 2 in the charts -- not bad for a CD you "ould hardly find". Come was shipped in such large number I bought it mere weeks after the release for less than midprice because record shops couldn't shift it at all and I saw copies in the "buy it for next to nothing" bins for years. TGE was easy to find at the time of release, but it's impossible to find now since WB can't repress it (part of a special deal). id " The record went to #2 and then fell off the charts. When I went to the store to purchase the CD I did not see any posters or advertisements in the record store. There were no store displays. I use to work for a record chain and I know what goes into a marketing campaign at the retail level. Not much went into marketing this record. In addtion, the videos for the Symbol cd came out long after the CD had fallen off the charts. Once Prince change his name to a symbol WB was over him and he was over WB. "Have you looked up who that "racist ass" is? Have you?" What the f**k are you talking about? The racist ass in the industry can be anyone black or white that stereotypes artist. An example an old ass like Rod is worth signing to a new deal because he is a old rocker and has a core audience that will keep buying his music. Until this recent cd Rod could not give his CD's away so were was that core audience. A black guy like Prince is just a 40 plus musician and nobody is interested in that anymore. Don't all black people like rap and seeing a bunch of guys running around with their pants hanging off there asses. Nobody cares about black music anyway. Anyone in the industry who think like would be a racist ass.

Nobody got mad or is "worried" that u didn't or dont like a certain artists or music. Nobody actually gives a fuck what you like or dont in the grand scheme of things. Buyt it's a ublic board and communication ensues. Some discussion deals with folks who discuss or make claims such as an artist like Chuck D and his music was crap in the genere of hip hop. If you can't see how ignorant that statement is then I understand why one would try and say "just because I dont like so and so". I mean come on. Quit trippin'...again. Shit said like you did is tantamount to saying Miles Davis couldnt play the horn or that Bacarachh was a shoddy piano player etc. Besides you should be cut some slack for that anmyways..its expected that some folks wouldn't "get" or appreciate (enjoy)Public Ememy just like there are some who can't get with Lawrence Welk music( ) So don't think anyone is "mad" or "worried" about your current music collection or thoughts on music. Dont make it sound as if people feel the need to take up a collection plate for you just because you said something that people disagree with. "Climb in my fur."

BartVanHemelen said: In the early 1990s, that's EXACTLY what Prince was trying to do. Ask Jill Jones about what happened to her second album, look at Carmen Electra, etc. "The Family" was a great album, but don't forget that it was a calculated attempt at going after "the Duran Duran money".
- I hope Prince never goes back to the time he produced his talentless protegees. One thing is to collaborate with Chaka and Patti La Belle. Other thing completely different is to collaborate with Carmen Electra
