This, of course, is the title song of Prince's 1984 feature-length film debut. Hearing the opening lines, "I never meant 2 cause u any sorrow/ I never meant 2 cause u any pain," a cynical type might dismiss this as one of those after-the-fact songs that only the truly foolish would ever have reason to write. By the end, however, you can't doubt the The Purple One's sincerity — even if it is too little, too late.
