NEWS - Patti LaBelle Signs With Def Jam Classics, Recording New Album

http://launch.yahoo.com/r...tID=213143 (4/23/03, 4 p.m. ET) -- Patti LaBelle has signed a new record deal with Def Jam Classics and is already working on a new album. She joined the label a month ago and said recording began before she even "signed on the dotted line." LaBelle has completed two tracks with contemporary R & B artist/producer Wyclef Jean and the team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, best-known for their productions with Janet Jackson. Other famous names have been courting the veteran singer, including Lenny Kravitz and Prince.

LaBelle said Prince doesn't want to just do a single track for an upcoming release, he wants to be involved with an entire gospel music project. "He wants to do, my whole gospel album, according to Prince," LaBelle said. "And you know, it's very deep so he and I are going to have to talk you know, about different things."

LaBelle recently released her second cookbook, Patti LaBelle's Lite Cuisine.

I saw it coming.

It would be very easy to do a Gospel song without mentioning Jesus. Just look at Kirk Franklin...

I think it is beautiful that Prince wants to work on a gospel album.

I don't think Prince should do a gospel album at all. He should stick to what he is good at: funk, rock. R&B and jazz. How many church people would buy a gospel album by him anyway?

If the music is good and the message is good they'll buy it.

He has had gospel type songs on his records for years. If the record is on a major label people will it buy it.
Lot's of RnB stars do gospel records.

How many church people do you think bought R Kelly's stuff? Church folks are not hard to please these days. Now if your talking about me, I would gladly buy a christian album by Prince. I listen to "I would die for you" and think about Jesus, "what if God where one of us" the Cross, Holy River,...You name it.

Like I said b4 it's really easy to make a christian album and never mention Jesus. You can even mention Jehovah and it can still be a christian CD.

Kirk franklin does mention Jesus in his songs. He is a great writer as is prince. gospel is a genre that still respects and appreciates musicianship, real singers, and great writing but its audience is very diverse and divided in there tastes. P's and Patti's success would depend on how they present themselves and what there message is. usually well know artist like patti will lean heavily on the insperational side of gospel music, they define it as more of a sound than a message. we'll see!

Very rarely does an R&B, rock and roll artist have success when they make gospel albums(stephanie mills, oleta adams, one of the guys from Dru Hill just to name a few). People look at them as being hypocritical. You can't say "I love that a--" one minute and then say "I love Jesus" the next.
