Sheila E at Playboy Jazz Festival I was at the 21st Annual Playboy Jazz Festival over the weekend. Pete Escovedo was on the bill for Sunday and sounded great. I noticed Sheila E. hugging Bill Cosby (who is the MC every year) before the show started so I figured she would sit in with her family. Sure enough she was introduced and the crowd went wild. She ripped off a great solo on the congas as her brother and father did timbales.
Later that night I was reading the synopsis on psuedo-jazz sax man Boney James in the program. It seems that before he was a star he played keyboards for Morris Day. After Morris heard him play sax he decided to incorporate sax into the routine. James returned the favor Sundat night by ripping off Morris patented dances moves during one of the many adaptatioins of popular R&B tunes. His guitar player and bass player were right there with him and they almost looked like the Time! I heard they guy behind me laugh out loud, "Hey, they are doing the Morris Day!" Dont know how news worthy this is but I like to see how the influence of Prince is almost unavoidable if you go to enough concerts and see enough good musicians. | |
